❤️ A HUGE THANK YOU TO EVERYONE WHO MADE MENSTRUAL HYGIENE DAY 2026 A SUCCESS! ❤️
To all our amazing partners and participants – we couldn’t have done this without YOU!
RUKA SRHR Network is so grateful to:
✅ Care Kenya (SHE SOARS Project)
✅ Hope Worldwide Kenya
✅ VORP East Africa
✅ SheCare Africa
And all other partners who came on board to support this important day.
A special shoutout to every young girl, woman, and community member who joined us in Maji Mazuri – from those aged 15 to our beloved sisters over 24 who came to learn and celebrate with us. Your presence, openness to discuss critical topics like menstrual hygiene, sexual health, family planning, and reproductive conditions showed us the power of community.

Together, we’re breaking taboos and building a healthier, more informed Kasarani! Here’s to more impactful work ahead.

This years' Menstrual Hygiene Day - Global session held in Clay City Ward in Kasarani came with some challenges, but it was ultimately a great success and has since become a flagship initiative within Clay City Ward. To minimize difficulties in future, we plan to design more activities based on key issues we identified—such as improving information sharing and ensuring health knowledge reaches the grassroots level, with a focus on specific community groups.

As part of the CARE Canada Youth Advisory Structure, working alongside Hope World Wide Kenya to deliver the SHE SOARS Project, we believe in transforming communities one step at a time. Consequently, we aim to scale up SRHR awareness efforts across Clay City, Mwiki, Kasarani, and parts of Njiru. This is a direct response to the concerning health trends among adolescents and young people in these areas. Success in addressing the three major health risks facing Kasarani Sub-County—particularly in preventing teenage pregnancy and expanding access to SRHR information—will require partnerships and support from stakeholders.

Yesterday we marked World Menstrual Hygiene Day 2026 under the global theme “Periods in Transition: Navigating Change”, the team at Ruka SRHR Network — Kasarani’s Youth Advisory Structure for CARE Canada She Soars Project — joined hands with Hope Worldwide Kenya, CARE YAB-Kenya, VORP EA and SheCare Africa to celebrate in Maji Mazuri! 🎉
True to this year’s focus on adapting to changes in our health, lives, and environments, our session brought together young people aged 15–24 — and many women above 24 who also turned up! We split into age groups to discuss exactly how we navigate critical areas of reproductive health and well-being through every stage of life:
✨ Responsible sexual health & healthy relationships
✨ Menstrual hygiene and dignified management
✨ Family planning choices
✨ Reproductive health conditions – including endometriosis, ovarian cysts, cervical cancer and more.

There is so much strength in coming together to learn, share, and support one another through every transition. When we stand united, women’s health thrives 💪

Maji Mazuri, located in Kasarani Constituency, hosts a significant population of urban refugees mainly from the DRC, Rwanda, and Burundi, who constitute up to 30% of the total residents. Like the rest of Nairobi County and specifically Kasarani Sub-county, the area grapples with the well-documented triple threats: high population density, inadequate access to quality healthcare services, and widespread socioeconomic disparities. These challenges are further compounded here by major cultural differences and language barriers, which significantly hinder effective service delivery, especially in health. Today, as we mark World Menstrual Health Day, we are bringing together young people aged 15–24 for an open and honest discussion about the issues affecting them. Together, we will develop an action plan to guide community-led interventions that address these gaps directly.

People living with HIV are quietly stepping away from their treatment. The reasons are heavy: drug fatigue, long journeys to clinics, and the crushing weight of stigma.

Every day without medication puts lives at risk. We need to act now to make care more accessible, reduce stigma, and support those on their treatment journey.

Government Unveils National GBV Reporting WhatsApp Platform at Second Bi-Annual National Gender Sector Working Group Meeting

The government has launched a key new initiative to improve how Gender-Based Violence (GBV) cases are reported, handled, and prevented nationwide.

The newly introduced National GBV Reporting WhatsApp platform — accessible via +254 724 884 444 — offers a confidential channel for survivors to receive psychological support, legal guidance, counseling, and referrals to essential services. It covers both physical violence and Technology-Facilitated Gender-Based Violence.

Speaking at the event, Cabinet Secretary for Gender, Culture and Children Services, Hanna Cheptumo, noted that the platform uses wide digital access to deliver fast, private, and automated assistance. This will ensure survivors get timely help while strengthening efforts to prevent such violence.

During the same meeting, the Ministry also launched guidelines to integrate gender considerations into climate action. This framework aims to ensure that policies and responses to climate change address the unique and often heavier impacts felt by women and vulnerable groups.

The gathering brought together government representatives, development partners, and civil society organizations working in the gender sector.

The 2026 Kenya Economic Survey reveals a worrying trend, deeply linked to challenges like period poverty.
Data shows teenage pregnancies rose from 224,333 in 2024 to 235,938 in 2025. The surge is most alarming among girls aged 10 to 14, a group particularly vulnerable due to lack of access to sanitary products, proper hygiene facilities, and comprehensive education—factors that increase their risk of exploitation and early pregnancy. Nairobi recorded the highest cases at 14,291, followed by Kakamega with 11,835.
