THE UNSUNG HERO:

Ole Kaputah, the man who cooled the temperaments at Bomas

Description

BY KNU REPORTER
Kenyans who keenly watched the release of the presidential results at the Bomas recently must be wondering who the Maasai who commanded peace songs is.
Musician Joshua ole Kaputah breathed out peace songs at the time when everything appeared to have gone wrong at the dais as MPs and supporters of the Azimio coalition sought the neck of IEBC chairman, Wafula Chebukati.
Ole Kaputah, without looking at the unfolding political sideshows, put up a brave face as he led his squad in belching out patriotic songs.
This is the first time Kaputah paid a major role in a national event, and to the best of his knowledge, he says he knew he was in control.
“I assumed all the political sideshows and controlled my army in singing patriotic numbers. Inside me, I believed that God was in control,” said Kaputah during this interview.
Ole Kaputah is not new to election troubles in Kenya. He witnessed the suffering of many as a result of divisive elections and together with his colleagues, he founded the Narok County Peace Association in 2017 to help in preaching peace and tolerance among different communities in Narok.
His music was the perfect instrument for preaching peace.
The Narok County Peace Association has now widened its objectives and is involved in charity, community sensitisation and awareness, rescue missions and is currently working on the construction of the Entishipata Rescue Hope Center located in Mlimani Estate Narok county.
“Our vulnerable in the society cannot have peace unless they have food to eat, a safe place to call home, friends and partners who they can rely on,” says Kaputah.
Ole Kaputah, during the interview, said, he didn’t grow up with the basic needs that most children are provided with.
He knew he had to do something for the ones without. Not only for himself, but for the next generation.
Ole Kaputah has built a satisfactory life for his family, but he knew there were people in need of shelter.
Those who know him call him Ole Kaputa the man of God, the musician, the Narok Peace Ambassador, and the Community Activist.
Those who don’t know him, will just say yule Maasai wa kuruka (that Maasai who jumps).
He wears many hats, presumably because he has a big heart.
All the hats off, who is this guy, and what is his story?
Known by many as the famous Musician, who blessed our radios and cassette players with his hit song Nanu in 2013, Kaputah’s inspiration to do music came from the humble beginnings that have made him who he is today.
Born and raised in Narok, and after losing his parents at quite a young age, he was forced to adapt and survive in the harsh world of ‘living as an orphan’.
His sisters decided to get married, to feed the family and have a home for the siblings when schools were closed. But he never lacked faith.
He vividly remembers a day when he went to visit a neighbour’s house and the girl in the house said “Kitaro, umekuja kudoea” – this means that you have come to take advantage of our food.
He naively said “Yes” not knowing the meaning of this.
He eventually completed high school, where he met the love of his life. Who in fact was one of the friends who escorted him out of the school.
Ole Kaputah is a father figure and a vibrant Christian who dispenses his duties and mandate to colleagues and the entire humanity.
He is a shrewd custodian of societal morals who has been transforming the livelihoods of his people behind the scenes.
It is in the public domain that Kaputah has been useful in paying school fees for needy children, including, rescuing girls from early forced marriages and ge***al mutilation and taking them to school.
The gospel artist has been feeding widows, street families and people with disabilities, assisting in building and spreading the gospel and footing hospital bills for the sick across the Maasai nation and beyond.
Everybody who has interacted with him can ascertain that he is cut above the rest, and one will never have enough humour, generosity gentleness of this humbled personality.
Ole Kaputah is a renowned evangelist and a celebrated gospel artist whose hit song of peace dubbed 'Kenya ni Mimi, Kenya ni Wewe’ have given him a standing ovation where it gets recognition worldwide hence receiving congratulatory goodwill messages from the UK, US, Zimbabwe among other countries.
The alumni of the Narok High School, orphaned at an early age, have received many national and international awards and recognition besides being the Rift Valley Peace Ambassador (2019).
He also got a United Nations award in 2021 and a National Cohesion and Integrated Commission (NCIC) award in 2022 all for preaching peace.
Equally, he has met and hosted powerful dignitaries for peace concerts, notably; Rev Lucy Natasha of Empowerment Church, Wafula Chebukati IEBC chairman, Ezekiel Mutua, CEO of the Music Copyright Society of Kenya and Apostle Joshua Selman who is a global televangelist among others.
