WHO WE ARE

On the 3rd of May, 2017, the Kariuki family lost their son, Josiah, in particularly tragic circumstances. Josiah, effervescent, energetic, jovial, the life and joy of every family moment, did the unthinkable and took his own life. The Kariuki family, and indeed, all their friends were stunned and completely devastated. Josiah was struggling with complex mental health issues that, we have no doubt, led to this shocking end.

Against all odds, and in true Josiah spirit his family, and his numerous friends, have bravely resolved that Josiah’s tragic parting will not be in vain. The pain and helplessness that the Kariuki family felt in the dark days following the 3RD of May 2017, that continues to haunt them to this day, will not, if they can help it, be felt by too many other families. Indeed, not if we can all help it.

It is clear to many of us whose minds were focused on the problem, following this terrible tragedy, that there is a huge and growing mental health crisis in Kenya. The World Health Organisation tells us that up to 7,000 Kenyans commit su***de annually due to mental health related issues. It is also estimated that 20-40% of those seeking out-patient services in Kenyan hospitals have one or more mental disorders. Globally it is estimated that a stunning 450 million people suffer from mental disorders, with three quarters of these living in the middle to low income countries of the world. The challenge before us is massive. But doing nothing about it is not an option.
