Reflections from the Kisumu Wellness Expo: Building Sustainable Mental Health Systems in Communities

The Kisumu Wellness Expo created an important platform for conversations on the growing need for sustainable and community-driven mental health systems. One message stood out clearly: mental health is deeply connected to the social, economic, educational, and developmental realities within our communities.

Today, unemployment, family pressure, financial instability, workplace stress, social isolation, and uncertainty about the future continue to contribute to anxiety, depression, burnout, substance use, and emotional distress, especially among young people.

The keynote speech emphasized the need to integrate mental health into all levels of development planning โ€” from schools and workplaces to county and national government systems. Mental wellbeing must be treated as a development priority, not an afterthought.

A key focus was the role of schools and learning institutions. As infrastructure development continues, there is also need to invest in strong guidance and counselling systems, psychosocial support services, safe spaces, and mental health awareness programs that respond to the realities children and adolescents face today. Academic pressure, family expectations, peer influence, unemployment fears, and social media pressures continue to affect young people at increasingly early ages.

The Expo also highlighted the importance of early intervention, youth empowerment, sports, arts, recreation, and talent development as protective factors in promoting positive mental health among children and adolescents.

Key Takeaways

โœ” Mental health should be integrated into national and county development agendas.
โœ” Schools should strengthen guidance and counselling systems alongside physical infrastructure development.
โœ” Early intervention and community awareness are critical in preventing severe mental health challenges.
โœ” Youth empowerment, sports, arts, and recreation are important tools in promoting emotional wellbeing.
โœ” Workplace mental health policies and supportive environments are urgently needed.
โœ” Community-based mental health services must be strengthened to reach underserved populations.

Calls to Action

๐Ÿ”น Increase investment in accessible and affordable mental health services.
๐Ÿ”น Prioritize psychosocial support systems in schools and universities.
๐Ÿ”น Normalize conversations around mental health and reduce stigma.
๐Ÿ”น Strengthen partnerships between government, civil society, schools, and grassroots organizations.
๐Ÿ”น Promote healthier work environments that prioritize employee wellbeing.

As Stand Out 4 Mental Health, we reaffirm our commitment to bridging gaps in mental health care through advocacy, awareness creation, expressive art therapy, psychosocial support, and community engagement initiatives, especially in underserved communities.

One memorable message from the keynote speech shared by Dr. Julius Mac Odero, Deputy Director at KeNHA, was:

โ€œThe success of a nation is not measured only by the infrastructure it builds but by the wellbeing of the people.โ€

At the Kisumu Wellness Expo, we had the opportunity to showcase the impact of Structured Play and Expressive Art Therapy as innovative, accessible, and community-centered approaches to mental health support.

In many underserved communities, access to mental health care remains limited due to stigma, financial barriers, shortage of professionals, and lack of awareness. Through structured play, art activities, storytelling, creative expression, and interactive learning tools, we create safe spaces where children, adolescents, and young people can communicate emotions, build resilience, process experiences, and develop healthy coping skills โ€” often without needing to first โ€œfind the right words.โ€

Our showcase highlighted how expressive art and play-based approaches can:

๐ŸŽจ Encourage emotional expression and self-awareness
๐Ÿงฉ Reduce stress, anxiety, and social isolation
๐Ÿค Strengthen social connection and communication
๐ŸŒฑ Support healing, confidence, and resilience in children and youth
๐Ÿ’ฌ Create safe and non-judgmental spaces for conversations around mental health

These approaches are especially important in communities that lack adequate mental health infrastructure because they are affordable, inclusive, engaging, and easy to integrate into schools, community programs, and youth spaces.

At Stand Out 4 Mental Health , we believe mental health support should not only exist in hospitals and clinics โ€” it should also exist in schools, playgrounds, art spaces, and within communities where people live and grow.

Bridging gaps in mental health care starts with creating accessible spaces where healing, expression, and human connection are possible.

1st Plenary: From Awareness to Action

One of the key discussions during the Kisumu Wellness Expo focused on moving mental health conversations from awareness to meaningful action by building functional, accessible, and sustainable mental health systems within communities.

The session highlighted the important work being done by TINADA in strengthening mental health systems and advocating for more community-centered approaches to care. A major concern raised was how healthcare systems have historically placed greater focus on physical health while mental health continues to receive limited attention, funding, and policy prioritization.

The shortage of trained mental health professionals across the country continues to widen the treatment gap, leaving many individuals and families without access to timely support and care. At the same time, financial hardship, unemployment, and economic pressure were identified as major contributors to stress, anxiety, depression, substance use, and emotional distress among many households.

The discussion also referenced the recent NACADA wastewater analysis report, which revealed worrying trends in substance and drug abuse within the country. The findings serve as a reminder that mental health and substance use challenges are deeply interconnected and require urgent multi-sectoral interventions, prevention strategies, awareness creation, and stronger community support systems.

Key Takeaways

โœ” Mental health should be prioritized equally alongside physical health.
โœ” Kenya urgently needs more investment in training and deploying mental health professionals.
โœ” Financial stress and unemployment are major drivers of mental health challenges.
โœ” Substance abuse prevention and early intervention must be strengthened.
โœ” Community-based mental health systems are critical in bridging access gaps.
โœ” Collaboration between government, civil society, schools, healthcare providers, and communities is essential.

Call to Action

๐Ÿ”น Increase funding and policy support for mental health services.
๐Ÿ”น Normalize conversations around mental health and substance use recovery.
๐Ÿ”น Invest in prevention, early intervention, and youth-focused programs.
๐Ÿ”น Support organizations and grassroots initiatives working to bridge gaps in mental health care.
๐Ÿ”น Create safe spaces within schools, workplaces, and communities where people can seek help without stigma.

Mental health is everyoneโ€™s responsibility. Whether through advocacy, listening, mentorship, awareness creation, or supporting community initiatives, we all have a role to play in building healthier, safer, and more resilient communities.

Day 2 | Family, Faith, Care & Healing

I was honoured to serve as a panelist during the Family, Faith, Care & Healing conversation at the Kisumu Wellness Expo โ€” a deeply important discussion on the realities, burden, and future of caregiving in Kenya.

A representative from Salama Cancer Centre Kisumu highlighted the emotional and physical burnout experienced by both healthcare workers and family caregivers in palliative care settings. The discussion also explored the role of faith and religion in giving patients and families hope, strength, meaning, and emotional comfort during difficult seasons of illness and caregiving.

I spoke about how caregiving has evolved over time. Today, caregiving goes beyond simply providing physical support โ€” caregivers are increasingly expected to carry emotional, psychological, financial, and social responsibilities, often with little preparation, recognition, or support systems in place.

One important question raised was: How can we rate caregiving in Kenya today? While caregiving remains one of the most essential pillars of healthcare and community wellbeing, it is still largely undervalued, underfunded, and unsupported. According to WHO, caregivers globally experience significantly higher risks of stress, anxiety, depression, burnout, and compassionate fatigue, especially when long-term care is involved.

The discussion highlighted the growing burden of caregiving, including:
โœ” Emotional exhaustion and compassionate fatigue
โœ” Financial strain and social isolation
โœ” Trauma from neglect, mistreatment, or lack of support for caregivers
โœ” Mental and physical burnout among healthcare workers and family caregivers
โœ” Limited psychosocial support systems for caregivers

We also discussed the importance of:
๐Ÿ”น Regular debrief sessions for healthcare workers and caregivers
๐Ÿ”น Peer psychosocial support groups and safe spaces
๐Ÿ”น Integrating nutrition and self-care into caregiving support systems
๐Ÿ”น Stronger community caregiving structures and home-based care support
๐Ÿ”น Government policies that recognize, protect, and support caregivers

Caregiving cannot continue to remain invisible within healthcare systems. Sustainable caregiving systems require investment in mental health support, caregiver training, community awareness, policy protection, and accessible psychosocial services.

As Stand Out 4 Mental Health, we reaffirm our commitment under our Peer Support pillar to continue creating safe spaces, strengthening psychosocial support networks, and advocating for the wellbeing of caregivers, families, and healthcare workers within our communities.

Supporting caregivers is not optional โ€” it is part of building compassionate, resilient, and healthy communities.

On Saturday at the mental health clinic at Alliance High School, we had honest and meaningful conversations around the realities many students silently face within high-performing academic environments. As the school celebrates 100 years of excellence and culture, it was also important to reflect on the wellbeing of the learners carrying the weight of expectations while striving to succeed.

Under the theme โ€œMore Good Days Together,โ€ the session created a safe space for students to openly engage on mental health, emotional wellbeing, and healthy coping strategies.

Key Takeaways From the Session

โœ”๏ธ Academic pressure can greatly affect studentsโ€™ emotional wellbeing, especially in highly competitive school environments.

โœ”๏ธ Peer pressure and constant comparison with others can lead to feelings of inadequacy, isolation, and low self-esteem.

โœ”๏ธ High expectations from parents, society, teachers, and even self-imposed standards can create overwhelming stress and emotional exhaustion.

โœ”๏ธ Anxiety among children and adolescents is increasingly becoming common, yet many young people suffer silently due to fear of judgment or appearing โ€œweak.โ€

โœ”๏ธ School culture plays a major role in shaping mental wellness. A culture that values both performance and emotional wellbeing creates healthier and more balanced students.

โœ”๏ธ Students need safe spaces where they can express emotions freely, seek support, and feel heard without stigma.

How Expressive Art Therapy Helps

Through our expressive art therapy sessions at Stand Out 4 Mental Health, students were able to:

๐ŸŽจ Express emotions that may be difficult to verbalize
๐ŸŽจ Reduce stress and anxiety in healthy, creative ways
๐ŸŽจ Improve emotional regulation and self-awareness
๐ŸŽจ Build peer connection and emotional support
๐ŸŽจ Strengthen confidence, identity, and resilience
๐ŸŽจ Promote healing through creativity, storytelling, movement, and structured play

These sessions remind young people that mental health conversations can be engaging, safe, creative, and transformative.

Recommendations & Ways to Support Children and Adolescentsโ€™ Mental Health

โœ”๏ธ Create emotionally safe environments at home and in school where young people can talk openly.

โœ”๏ธ Encourage balance between academic excellence and emotional wellbeing.

โœ”๏ธ Normalize seeking help and mental health support without shame or stigma.

โœ”๏ธ Introduce wellness programs, peer support clubs, mentorship, and creative therapy spaces in schools.

โœ”๏ธ Parents, teachers, and caregivers should intentionally check in on children emotionally โ€” not only academically.

โœ”๏ธ Celebrate effort, growth, character, and wellbeing, not just grades and performance.

โœ”๏ธ Encourage healthy coping strategies such as art, journaling, sports, music, rest, prayer, and meaningful social connection.

As we continue creating more good days together, may we remember that behind every high-performing student is a human being who also needs rest, support, understanding, and emotional care.
