Has your cat recently undergone surgery, been hospitalized, or recovered from an illness? The care they receive at home can play a big role in their recovery.

Here are a few ways to support a convalescent cat:

🐾 Provide a quiet, comfortable resting area away from noise and other pets.

🐾 Monitor eating and drinking. A loss of appetite can slow recovery and should be reported to your veterinarian.

🐾 Administer medications exactly as prescribed, even if your cat appears to be feeling better.

🐾 Keep an eye on wounds or surgical sites for redness, swelling, discharge, or excessive licking.

🐾 Encourage hydration and offer palatable foods if recommended by your veterinarian.

🐾 Limit activity if advised, especially after surgery or injury.

🐾 Watch for changes in behaviour. Hiding, lethargy, difficulty breathing, vomiting, or refusal to eat may indicate a problem.

Recovery takes time, patience, and plenty of TLC. If you're ever unsure about your cat's progress, don't hesitate to contact your veterinarian.

Have you ever cared for a recovering cat? What was the biggest challenge?

Being a great veterinarian takes more than medical knowledge. Here are some skills that can make a real difference in practice:

🐾 Communication Skills:
Being able to explain diagnoses, treatment plans, and expectations clearly to clients is just as important as making the right diagnosis.

🐾 Confidence in Clinical Decision-Making:
You won't know everything on day one. Learn to gather information, think critically, and make informed decisions.

🐾 Continuous Learning:
Veterinary medicine is constantly evolving. Stay curious, attend CPD events, read, ask questions, and never stop learning.

🐾 Time Management:
Balancing consultations, procedures, records, emergencies, and client communication is a skill that develops with practice.

🐾 Teamwork:
Veterinary care is a team effort. Building good relationships with colleagues, nurses, technicians, and support staff improves patient outcomes.

🐾 Emotional Resilience:
Not every case will have a happy ending. Learning how to cope with challenging situations is essential for a sustainable career.

🐾 Professionalism
Integrity, accountability, and respect go a long way in building trust with clients and colleagues.

The good news? Most of these skills aren't mastered overnight. They are developed through experience, mentorship, and a willingness to grow.

If you're a veterinarian, what's one skill you wish you'd focused on earlier in your career?

Did you know?

The World Small Animal Veterinary Association (WSAVA) does not create laws for veterinarians or pets.

Instead, WSAVA develops globally respected guidelines and recommendations that help improve companion animal care, welfare, nutrition, vaccination protocols, pain management and veterinary standards around the world.

These guidelines help veterinary professionals stay informed and aligned with evidence-based best practices in small animal medicine.

Modern veterinary medicine is constantly evolving and continuing education plays a big role in ensuring better care for animals and the communities that love them.
