As El Niño approaches, Kenya is expected to experience heavier rainfall, flooding, and increased landslide risks in the coming months. In times like these, trees become one of our strongest natural allies.

In stressful times of El Niño, trees help:

- Reduce soil erosion and the risk of landslides by holding the soil firmly in place.
- They absorb excess rainwater, reducing surface runoff and the severity of floods.
- They support healthier ecosystems and provide long-term climate resilience for communities and wildlife.

Many conservation programs start by bringing in external experts and new systems and only later try to involve local communities.

The result is often limited ownership, resistance, and solutions that don’t fully fit the local context.

A better approach is clear: Build on local knowledge and skills first. Value indigenous knowledge before introducing external expertise.

When we start by recognizing and strengthening what communities already know and do well, new ideas are more easily accepted, adapted, and sustained. This is especially important in landscapes like Amboseli, where indigenous knowledge about wildlife, land, and climate has been refined over generations.

We help organizations put this principle into practice. Through our youth upskilling programs, community engagement training, and localization support, we equip teams and young leaders to:

We’re delighted to join Friends of Ondiri Wetland Kenya (FOWK) for the Ondiri Wetland Conservation Run on Saturday, 31st January 2026 at Ondiri Wetland Info Centre.

Ondiri Wetland is a critical biodiversity ecosystem and an important source of water that feeds into the Nairobi River. Protecting it means safeguarding wildlife habitats, supporting local livelihoods and securing water for current and future generations.

Through this run, we come together to raise awareness on wetland conservation and the vital role Ondiri plays in our natural ecosystem.
