What shapes leadership choices: personalities or issues?
At the KIBESCO Leadership 360 Conference, nearly 300 young people explored this question through an immersive voter education simulation facilitated by Emerging Leaders Foundation-Africa (ELF-Africa).
Using an interactive election scenario, participants debated issues, weighed competing priorities, made strategic choices, and experienced firsthand how different decisions produce different outcomes.
The exercise intentionally moved beyond personality-driven politics, challenging participants to focus on the issues, values, and trade-offs that shape leadership and governance.
One lesson emerged clearly: Informed participation requires more than showing up on election day.
It requires the ability to interrogate promises, evaluate competing interests, distinguish fact from rhetoric, and understand how leadership decisions affect communities.
As more young people engage in governance conversations, public participation processes, and civic action, these capabilities become increasingly important. They are the foundation of active citizenship and meaningful democratic participation.
The simulation provided an opportunity to practice these skills in real time, reinforcing that democracy is not only about casting a ballot, but also about understanding the choices behind it and the consequences that follow.
Because strong democracies are built when citizens make decisions informed by issues, values, evidence, and accountability, rather than personalities and political narratives.
