HDP Team Kakuma Launches Digital Peacebuilding Training to Combat Online Hate Speech

DRC Kenya HDP Team Kakuma, under the DANIDA-funded SPA Project, launched a dynamic four-day digital peacebuilding training for 30 social media influencers (16 Female; 14 Male) from both the host and refugee communities. The training was officially launched by the DRC Area Manager for Kakuma, Mr. Hassan Dubat, who urged the participants to fully master these digital concepts to drive tangible, positive change across society.

Recognizing the critical role of digital spaces in modern conflict, this initiative equips local influencers with the advanced digital skills needed to counter misinformation, disinformation, and malformation. By mastering fact-checking, debunking techniques, and social media monitoring, these digital leaders will serve as a vital frontline defense offering powerful counter-narratives against online hate speech.

Guided by the UNDP framework, the training goes beyond theory to drive measurable social change. By transforming influencers into active digital peacebuilders, the project directly enhances social cohesion and fosters a safer, more unified community both online and offline.

RETHINKING WASTE. RESTORING DIGNITY. ADVANCING CIRCULAR ECONOMY IN DADAAB REFUGEE CAMP.

Since July 2024, the Black Soldier Fly (BSF) farming initiative funded by The World Bank and UNHCR and implemented by DRC Kenya at Dagahaley Refugee Camp within the Dadaab Refugee Complex has been transforming organic waste into sustainable livelihoods and environmental solutions through a circular economy approach.

Currently, the initiative is working with 40 beneficiaries from both refugee and host communities, equipping them with skills in BSF farming, poultry production, regenerative agriculture, and entrepreneurship. Through the sale of bananas, vegetables, BSF frass, and dried larvae, beneficiaries are already earning at least Ksh 10,000 per month, with projected earnings expected to increase to Ksh 25,000 per month once poultry egg production begins.

The project converts food waste collected from markets, households, and operational offices into high-protein poultry feed and organic fertilizer, reducing environmental pollution while strengthening food systems and regenerative farming practices.

Beyond production, the initiative is strengthening local systems through two registered Village Savings and Loan Associations (VSLAs), which have collectively mobilized Ksh 64,000 in savings within the last year. The project also promotes financial inclusion through account opening support, financial literacy, poultry training, and market linkages with private sector actors such as Uzima Chicks, financial institutions, and government departments including Trade and Livestock. Efforts toward KEBS certification are also ongoing to enhance product quality and market access.

This work has further been strengthened through partnerships with agencies operating within the UNHCR operational area, including Inkomoko, Refugee Consortium of Kenya (RCK), Save the Children International and Teree des Hommes Foundation through livelihoods programming, waste collection, and community engagement support.

In one of the SDACKED project participants' shops in Kamukunji, Nairobi. Nkomezi Espoir was today visited by a high delegation of dignitaries from Sweden & Embassy of Sweden in Nairobi at his Menvaa Shoe Shop. He was visited by Gunilla Carlson- Chair of the SIDA board, H.E Håkan Åkesson- Swedish Ambassador to Kenya, Marie Ottoson- Head of Development Cooperation at the Embassy of Sweden in Nairobi.

From documentation, financial literacy training and access to finance, Nkomezi Espoir’s journey as a D.R. Congolese refugee in Kenya is a good testimony that when systemic barriers are addressed & removed, refugees can actively engage in profitable businesses, drive economic and business growth and live comfortable lives.

Let’s scale up inclusive solutions to financial inclusion of refugees. Thanks to the support of Sweden, for creating opportunities for dignified lives for refugees through the Danish Refugee Council's SDACKED (Supporting Displacement Affected Communities in Kenya with Entrepreneurship Development) project.

DDanish Refugee Council Kenya Programme through the Karamoja Strong Program (KSP), facilitated a joint monitoring mission involving teams from Kenya and Uganda. The visit, themed “Hoe-in-Hand Monitoring of Resilience Design (RD) Work in the Karamoja Region,” brought together program staff and a Global Resilience Agricultural Design (RAD) Advisor and African Women Rising (AWR) team to observe and assess ongoing field interventions. The Mission was part of the technical support provided by AWR, a technical partner for the Resilience Design (RD) component of the program. This Component is implemented through local partnerships of Frontiers Children Development Organization (FCDO) and SIKOM Peace Network in Kenya, and Caritas Moroto services in Uganda.

The monitoring was conducted in Loima and Lokiriama Sub-Counties in Kenya, as well as Moroto and Napak Districts in Uganda, and additionally Pokot North in West Pokot County. The primary aim of the mission was to assess the progress, adoption, and practical application of Resilience Design approaches by community members following the cascade trainings. Key areas of the assessment included the establishment and utilization of water harvesting structures, improvements in soil health, and crop diversification practices as promoted under the RD approach. The monitoring also evaluated how effectively these practices are being integrated into local farming systems to enhance resilience to climate and environmental shocks.

During the visits, targeted refresher trainings for Tier 2 (T2) and Tier 3 (T3) participants were conducted aiming at strengthening their technical capacities. The sessions focused on improving planting techniques, redesigning and maintaining water harvesting structures, and enhancing community-level monitoring and follow-up mechanisms.

Today marked a significant milestone with the launch of the Public Benefit Organizations Regulatory Authority (PBORA) Annual Report 2024/2025 and the official opening of PBO Week 2026 under the theme: “A New Dawn in Action.”

The event was graced by the First Lady, Rachel Ruto, alongside Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen, government leaders, development partners, and civil society actors.

In her keynote, the First Lady emphasized:
“Compliance is not a matter of choice, but a responsibility where there is accountability, there is credibility.”

She reaffirmed the government’s commitment to an enabling environment for PBOs, highlighting digitization as key to efficiency and transparency.
The Cabinet Secretary underscored the completion of the PBORA Act and the importance of collaboration:
“PBOs do not compete with government they complement efforts, reaching communities where it matters most.”

At DRC, our Country Director, Simon Muteti Nzioka, reaffirmed DRC’s role as a protection powerhouse, working in close partnership with government, UN agencies, and local actors:

“Our impact is strengthened through partnerships advancing protection, self-reliance, and inclusive policies like the Shirika Plan to build more responsive and sustainable systems.”

As we begin PBO Week 2026, this moment calls for continued collaboration to strengthen accountability, impact, and service delivery across Kenya’s civil society sector.

Recently, the Senior Director, Recycling Value Chains at The Coca-Cola Foundation - The Coca-Cola Company visited DRC Danish Refugee Council’s Fair Recycling 2.0 Project in Nairobi. The real highlight of the visit was meeting the people driving change on the ground.

From waste pickers at aggregation sites to recyclers and manufacturers, we saw how plastic waste is being turned into income, opportunity, and cleaner communities.

One waste aggregator said:
“If you don’t take care of the environment, the environment will not take care of you.”

Despite challenges, especially for women working in tough environments, waste pickers continue to play a critical role in protecting our environment and powering the recycling economy.
The Fair Recycling 2.0 initiative aims to support more inclusive, dignified livelihoods while strengthening plastic recycling systems across Kenya.

Because when we support waste pickers, we support both people and planet.
