The conversation Kenya's clean energy sector needs is happening right now. 🌍

EPROK KENYA and Kenya Renewable Energy Association - KEREA are convening a closed industry roundtable, The Other Side of the Green Transition: Managing E-Waste from Kenya's Renewable Energy Boom, on the sidelines of the 2nd Kenya SEPL Expo 2026 at the Sarit Expo Centre, Nairobi.

The discussion brings together industry leaders, government agencies, financiers, and recycling operators to examine the end-of-life challenges facing solar panels, batteries, and EV components, as well as the gaps in Kenya's Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) framework that must be addressed as the sector scales.

KEREA is a supporting partner and exhibitor at Kenya SEPL Expo 2026 — East Africa's leading international exhibition for renewable energy, electrical, and lighting sectors, running 11–13 June at Sarit Expo Centre. Visit the KEREA booth to connect with the team and learn more about Solar Mkononi, their upcoming product. ☀️

As we continue our ongoing series of county-level engagements, EPROK KENYA alongside Haprok Kenya, paid a courtesy call to the County Government of Tharaka Nithi.

We had the opportunity to engage with Peterson Mwirigi, Chief Officer for Environment, in a conversation that reflected both the ambitions and the realities of waste management at the county level.

Tharaka Nithi County is already thinking ahead. Plans are underway to implement segregation at source and to develop a dedicated waste site where recyclable materials, including e-waste, are actively diverted from landfill. That is exactly the kind of infrastructure thinking that responsible EPR implementation requires.

A challenge that came through clearly was that, as electronic products such as mobile phones and solar systems become increasingly embedded in daily life, the question of what happens to them at the end of life is rarely part of the conversation at the point of purchase. Rising volumes of electronics, without the infrastructure or awareness frameworks to manage them responsibly, is a gap we cannot afford to ignore.

Two imperatives stood out from our discussion:
✅Structured collection points and processing pathways that direct recyclable e-waste to licensed recyclers rather than informal dumpsites.
✅Behaviour change — residents need to understand that a dead phone, a worn-out solar panel, or a broken charger is e-waste, not something to be stored indefinitely or discarded carelessly. Responsible disposal is both a civic and an environmental act.

These are precisely the gaps that EPROK Kenya exists to help close by working with counties to build the systems, awareness, and partnerships that make EPR real beyond policy.

As part of our ongoing county-level engagements, EPROK KENYA conducted a joint courtesy call with the County Government of Embu, joined by Haprok Kenya, in a coordinated approach to managing complementary waste streams.

We engaged with senior county leadership, including Erastus Macharia, Chief Officer for Environment, who set the tone with candour and urgency. Sixty per cent of waste in Embu County remains uncollected. This highlights a governance challenge, a public health risk, and an opportunity for the kind of structured, multi-stakeholder intervention that EPR is designed to enable.

Key themes from the engagement:
✅ Awareness creation — Residents and businesses need targeted sensitisation on responsible e-waste disposal.
✅ Joint sensitisation — Coordinated campaigns between PROs and county governments multiply reach and impact.
✅ Integration of waste pickers — Bringing informal sector actors into the formal waste value chain is both an equity imperative and a systems necessity.
✅ Shared infrastructure — Co-invested collection and processing infrastructure across waste streams is key to sustainable EPR implementation.

Alongside Haprok Kenya, we are building the coalitions that will make Kenya's circular economy ambitions a reality.

Today, EPROK KENYA visited Close the Gap Kenya at its newly launched Nairobi Circular Economy Hub, where pre-owned IT equipment is repaired and refurbished for continued use.

Our discussions focused on the important role that repair and refurbishment play in Kenya's e-waste ecosystem. By extending the life of devices, we can reduce waste, conserve valuable resources, and increase access to quality technology for more people.

At EPROK, we believe that a strong circular economy requires collaboration across the entire value chain. We look forward to working with Close the Gap Kenya to promote repair, refurbishment, and responsible e-waste management in Kenya.

Today, EPROK KENYA marked World Environment Day 2026 under the theme "Climate Action" residents of Baraka Estate showed that protecting our environment begins with the choices we make at home.

Together with our partners, E-waste initiative kenya. (EWIK) and The Kenya Alliance of Resident Associations, we brought the community together for an e-waste collection drive that saw residents safely dispose of end-of-life household appliances and other electronic waste. Through door-to-door collection and an awareness booth, we made responsible recycling more accessible to everyone.

Building on the success of previous drives that collected over 300 e-waste items and engaged more than 70 residents, today's initiative demonstrated the power of collective action in conserving resources, reducing pollution, and advancing a circular economy.

Thank you to everyone who participated and made World Environment Day count. 💚

As we mark , we are reminded that meaningful environmental action starts with the choices we make every day, including how we manage our waste.

At EPROK KENYA, we are advancing climate action through community-led collection initiatives that keep end-of-life electronics out of the environment and in the circular economy. Our recent Baraka Estate and textile collection drive brought together residents and partners in a shared commitment to responsible consumption and resource conservation. The result was over 300 electronic items and 150 kg of textiles diverted from improper disposal in a single day.

Our highlight video captures the stories, partnerships, and community spirit that made this impact possible. It is proof that when communities come together to take responsibility for their waste, real change happens.

As we continue the countdown to , we are reminded that building a requires strong partnerships.

Through our collaboration with E-waste initiative kenya., EPROK KENYA is helping ensure that end-of-life electronics are collected and responsibly recycled, keeping harmful materials out of the environment while recovering valuable resources. In this testimonial, Thuo Lawrence, Founder and Executive Director at E-WIK, shares E-WIK's role in the e-waste ecosystem and why proper recycling is essential for protecting both people and the planet.

Together, we are proving that is not only about what we consume, but also about what we do with products when they reach the end of their useful life.

♻️ Join us on 6th June at Baraka Estate, Embakasi and be part of the solution by bringing your old and unwanted electrical and electronic waste for responsible recycling.

As we count down to 2026, themed "Inspired by Nature. For Climate. For Our Future," we're reminded that meaningful environmental action often starts close to home.

One simple step? Clearing out the old electronics sitting in drawers, cupboards, and storage boxes and ensuring they are responsibly recycled. Every phone, charger, laptop, or appliance collected helps conserve resources, prevent pollution, and support a more circular future.

This testimonial from Catherine Makau, a resident of Baraka Estate, who joined our previous collection drive, shows why community participation matters.

♻️ Join us on 6th June at Baraka Estate and bring your end-of-life electrical and electronic waste for safe and responsible recycling.

📍 Meet us at Baraka Estate and be part of the solution.
