We are delighted to congratulate our dear Co-Chair of the Commission on Fieldwork and Innovative Methodologies, Milena Geisa dos Santos Martins, on earning her doctoral degree.

Milena successfully defended her doctoral thesis, "Algorithmic (Emotional) Management: An Ethnographic Case Study of an Emotional Self-Care App", on July 8th, 2026, and officially received her doctoral degree on September 21st, 2026.

On 4 August 2026, our Co-Chair, Milena Geisa dos Santos Martins, was invited by Dr. Anita Nudelman (Deputy Head of the IUAES Council Commission and Coordinator of the IUAES Internship Programme) to present her doctoral research (successfully defended in Brazil on 8 July 2026) and to share her professional experiences with IUAES interns.

Her thesis, entitled Algorithmic Emotional Management: An Ethnographic Case Study of Users’ Experiences with an Emotional Self-Care App, examines how users experience emotional transformations through their interactions with a digital self-care platform. Drawing on digital ethnography and users’ narratives, the research explores how the app shapes ways of feeling, interpreting, and managing emotions; contributes to the reconfiguration of memories; produces moralities of self-care; and reinforces neoliberal logics of individual responsibility.

During the meeting, she also drew on her academic journey, fieldwork experiences, methodological challenges, international collaborations, and professional involvement within the IUAES to share practical knowledge and guidance with the group. The audience responded enthusiastically to the presentation and particularly appreciated the opportunity to learn from her experiences, insights, and advice.

We warmly congratulate our Co-Chair, now Dr. Milena Geisa, on this important academic achievement and thank her for sharing her research and professional journey with the next generation of anthropologists. We look forward to reading the full thesis once it becomes publicly available and to following the future development of her work.
