The Courage to Claim Rights

This day celebrates the leadership, resilience, and contributions of women and girls of African descent who continue to shape their communities and societies.

Hope Through Education

What does citizenship mean?

For Peter Matele, it means hope. Hope that children can stay in school, access bursaries, and dream beyond the barriers that statelessness once imposed.

These are the voices captured in Peace Tree Network's research publication, The Road to Citizenship: The Case of Makonde.

Through this study, PTN explored how citizenship has transformed the lives of the Makonde community. While the research found encouraging progress in access to education, employment, identity documents and government services, it also highlighted the need for continued civic education, financial inclusion and secure land rights.

At PTN, we believe research is more than collecting data. It is about listening to communities, documenting lived experiences, and generating evidence that informs advocacy and lasting social change.

Research. Evidence. Action.

At Peace Tree Network (PTN), we believe that meaningful advocacy begins with listening.

That is why we conducted The Road to Citizenship: The Case of the Makonde, a research study exploring how Kenyan citizenship transformed the lives of the Makonde community after decades of statelessness.

The study found that citizenship opened doors to opportunities that had long been out of reach. Community members gained greater access to national identity documents, education, employment opportunities, and government social protection programmes.

Yet the research also revealed an important truth: legal recognition alone does not guarantee full inclusion.

Many community members continued to face challenges, including limited awareness of government opportunities, low financial literacy, unresolved land rights, and the need for greater civic and legal awareness.

For PTN, these findings reinforced an important lesson: research must lead to action.

Through evidence-based advocacy, we work to amplify community voices, inform public policy, strengthen civic education, and promote human rights and accountable governance. Because lasting change happens when communities are not only recognised by law, but are also empowered to participate fully in society.

🌱 Monday Motivation | Leadership Starts with One Step

Some journeys begin with a single step.

For , that journey started with long walks to school in the hills of Kijembe, Kwale County. Today, those same steps have led her to become a respected community leader, moderator, mentor, and advocate for women and girls.

As a participant in Peace Tree Network's community dialogues and women's leadership initiatives, Mtama strengthened her confidence, sharpened her leadership skills, and found new ways to mobilize her community around peace, justice, and civic participation.

Today she serves as:
✨ Vice Chairperson of the Kinondo Walk Movement
✨ Coordinator of the Msambweni Young Women's Movement
✨ GBV Champion
✨ Community facilitator and moderator
✨ Active member of the Kwale CSOs Consortium and the Kwale Mining Alliance

Her story reminds us that leadership is not reserved for a select few. It is built through learning, courage, service, and the willingness to keep showing up for your community.
