For many young Kenyans, success is still imagined behind a desk or in a Nairobi office. Meanwhile, farming has an image problem, it is too easily associated with poverty, hardship or as a last resort when other opportunities fail.

At the 3rd National Agroecology Symposium in Nairobi, that stereotype was met with a very different reality. The discussions ranged from science to policy, and addressed a more fundamental question: whose knowledge will shape the future of farming?

During Hivos' side event, together with GROOTS Kenya, there was opportunity for farmers' experiences to be recognized, also showing that women are already leading in agriculture.

This week, Hivos joins partners, policymakers, researchers, farmers, and practitioners at Kenya's 3rd National Agroecology Symposium to advance conversations on transforming agrifood systems through agroecology.

Through our Rural Women Cultivating Change program, we continue to champion agroecology as a pathway to resilient food systems, climate adaptation, and women's leadership. We are proud that our Program Officer, Chebet Chirchir, will be representing Hivos, bringing her experience and insights on the role of agroecology in building healthier communities and ecosystems.

As Chebet aptly puts it:

"Safe food is the intersection of ecology and health. Through agroecology, we heal the environment to secure the food system, ensuring that the health of the planet remains the ultimate safeguard for human wellbeing."
