When Rebecca Andrew joined the We Lead SRHR program in 2022, she was living in an IDP camp after being displaced by conflict. The knowledge and confidence she gained through the program inspired her to return to school and pursue studies in Reproductive Health and Family Planning. Today, she is a proud graduate with a CGPA of 3.48 and a commitment to helping others access vital SRHR information. Look at her story today. What if the answer to food insecurity, rising fertilizer costs, and energy poverty was already sitting in our backyards?

In Dakolé, rural Burkina Faso, farmers like Mathurin Hien are turning animal waste into clean cooking energy and organic fertilizer through biodigesters, proving that climate resilience does not always begin in boardrooms or billion-dollar innovations. Sometimes, it begins at household level.

Since installing his biodigester in 2018, Mathurin has reduced his dependence on firewood and cut fertilizer costs by over 70%, while producing nearly 10 tons of compost annually to nourish his papaya and moringa orchard. What was once discarded as waste is now powering livelihoods, restoring soils, and strengthening food security.

Across West and Central Africa, communities are facing interconnected crises: declining soil fertility, rising energy poverty, climate shocks, and soaring agricultural input costs. Through the African Biodigester Component (ABC), Hivos together with the West and Central Africa Biodigester Alliance are supporting locally rooted solutions that connect clean energy, regenerative agriculture, and economic resilience.

This is what circular economies look like in practice. Waste becomes energy. Energy supports farming. Farming strengthens livelihoods. And communities build resilience from within.

The future of sustainable development in Africa will not only be built through large-scale systems, but through scaling community-led solutions that are already working.

A criticism often directed at development programs is that once funding ends, the impact disappears with it. Especially projects set up and led by organizations without significant local involvement leave communities struggling to run them after donors move on. But not always.

Our Voices for Climate Justice (VCA) program officially came to an end in 2025.
