Why are we talking about indigenous seeds and genetic resources now.

Because we are losing them.

Local crop varieties are disappearing. Indigenous livestock breeds are being replaced. Traditional breeding, selection and knowledge are weakening.
Yet these are the resources communities have relied on for food, livelihoods and adapting to changing conditions.

When we lose diversity, we also lose choices for the future.

This is why the 1st Eastern Africa Indigenous Seed Conference is bringing these conversations to the centre.

📣 Vacancy alert - new program hiring for 11 roles!

Hivos was awarded the THRIVE Program (Promoting an Enabling Environment for Civil Society) under the Swedish Strategy for Support to Civil Society 2025–2029. The program aims to strengthen civil society resilience, sustainability, and effectiveness across Kenya, Zimbabwe, Colombia, and Lebanon.

THRIVE seeks to empower civil society actors to counter shrinking civic space and promote enabling environments through three interlinked outcomes:

- Safe and inclusive spaces for collaboration
- Strengthened operational and strategic capacities
- Increased access to knowledge, networks, tools, and resources

For many young Kenyans, success is still imagined behind a desk or in a Nairobi office. Meanwhile, farming has an image problem, it is too easily associated with poverty, hardship or as a last resort when other opportunities fail.

At the 3rd National Agroecology Symposium in Nairobi, that stereotype was met with a very different reality. The discussions ranged from science to policy, and addressed a more fundamental question: whose knowledge will shape the future of farming?

During Hivos' side event, together with GROOTS Kenya, there was opportunity for farmers' experiences to be recognized, also showing that women are already leading in agriculture.
