Meet Flora Wanja, a 53-year-old farmer from Siakago, Embu County.

For years, Flora relied on a diesel-powered water pump, which was expensive to run.

After taking part in Productive Uses of Energy (PUE) and Business Development trainings facilitated by Practical Action in Kenya’s Women in Energy Enterprises in Kenya (WEEK III) project, she switched to a solar-powered system.

Since then, her production costs have gone down, and her horticultural yields have improved.

Flora has also become a clean energy agent, promoting and selling pico and home system solar technologies in her community. More households are now adopting solar power, and she is earning an income from sales.

“Since I switched to solar, my community has embraced it. Many are now buying solar-powered devices and installing solar panels at their homes. This has created a steady source of income for me through sales.”

Thanks to ENERGIA - International Network on Gender and Sustainable Energy, and Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency (SIDA) for supporting this work.

Yesterday, Practical Action in Kenya, together with Solar Sister, had the privilege of hosting a field visit with Sida - Styrelsen för Internationellt Utvecklingssamarbete and ENERGIA - International Network on Gender and Sustainable Energy, donors of the Women in Energy Enterprises in Kenya (WEEK III) program.

The visit provided a valuable opportunity to engage with County Government of Embu led by H.E.Justus Kinywa Mugo, women entrepreneurs advancing clean energy technologies, and key ecosystem actors driving sustainable energy solutions at community level.

The engagements highlighted the impact of donor-supported initiatives and reinforced opportunities to partner, collaborate, and scale women-led solutions for inclusive and sustainable energy access at both grassroots and national levels.

Through WEEK III, Practical Action continues to work with partners such as Kingdom Bank Kenya and Micro and Small Enterprises Authority (MSEA) among others, to strengthen access to finance, build enterprise capacity, and expand opportunities for women in clean energy across Embu, Meru County, and Tharaka Nithi County.

We appreciate Sida and ENERGIA for their continued support and commitment to advancing women’s economic empowerment through clean energy initiatives.

Congratulations to The County Government of Meru - 012 on the launch of its first County Energy Plan (CEP) last week. This marks an important step in expanding access to clean, reliable, and affordable energy.

Unveiled by Ag. County Secretary David Baariu, the plan provides a pathway to unlock investment and drive productivity in agriculture, water, health, and enterprise.

It also prioritises underserved groups, including women and people with disabilities and contributes to stronger, coordinated national energy planning.

Meru County led the multi-stakeholder CEP development process, with Practical Action in Kenya and partners facilitating technical input and inclusive participation. This helped ensure the CEP is evidence-based, gender-responsive, and grounded in local priorities. The county will lead implementation and regularly review progress.

Our team, led by Project Coordinator Joyce Mureithi, joined partners in Meru for the CEP launch. We appreciate the collaboration with the European Union and the Ministry of Energy and Petroleum (MoEP) through the Sustainable Energy Technical Assistance (SETA) programme and ENERGIA - International Network on Gender and Sustainable Energy in developing the CEP.

Practical Action has worked with 18 counties, including Meru, on CEP development. The process is ongoing in four more counties, with support from UK PACT (Partnering for Accelerated Climate Transitions) and MoEP.

Congratulations to Kisumu for being named among 20 cities globally taking bold steps to reduce waste, promote circular economy solutions and build more sustainable, resilient, and inclusive urban systems.

A UN Advisory Board made the announcement yesterday to coincide with the International Day for Zero Waste.

While challenges remain, the selected cities are putting in place practical solutions that create opportunities in waste management and support circular economy approaches.

In Kisumu, this recognition reflects the leadership of the County Government of Kisumu and Kisumu City, working with private sector actors, informal waste workers and a wide range of partners, including Practical Action in Kenya, Riviera Travel, and Climate & Clean Air Coalition.

We look forward to enhanced partnerships to strengthen circular waste management systems to improve waste collection services, reduce pollution and support sustainable livelihoods for informal waste workers and other actors in the waste sector, including women.

For the full details of the announcement, see the comments section.

We look forward to joining the County Government of Meru and partners tomorrow for the official launch of Meru’s first County Energy Plan (CEP).

The document sets out priority actions to expand access to clean, affordable, and reliable energy across the county, with a focus on reaching marginalised groups, including women and people with disabilities.

Meru County led a collaborative process with stakeholders to develop the plan. Practical Action in Kenya and partners, with funding from the International Network on Gender and Sustainable Energy (ENERGIA) and the European Union, provided technical input. This helped strengthen the evidence base, promote inclusive planning, and enable county-led decision-making.

The county will lead implementation and regularly review progress. The CEP is aligned with the Energy Act (2019), Meru Vision 2040, and the County Integrated Development Plan.

Practical Action has worked with 18 counties to develop robust CEPs. With support from UK PACT (Partnering for Accelerated Climate Transitions), we've also teamed up with the Ministry of Energy and Petroleum and five additional counties to develop CEPs, County Energy Policies and investment Prospectuses.

This work strengthens county-led planning and coordination to expand access to clean energy.

In parts of Kisumu’s informal settlements, waste that once polluted homes, rivers and Lake Victoria is now being sorted, collected and recycled.

Community waste management enterprises are helping drive this change. One example is the Ondiek Ten Top Youth Group, led by Fred Misach.

Fred and members of the group collect waste from homes weekly for a small fee. They also teach families how to sort different types of waste, such as plastics, cartons and bottles, through practical demonstrations.

The group of 20 young people, including 9 women, buys recyclables from residents and sells them to recyclers. Income from the sale of recyclables is increasing steadily, and the number of homes they serve has also grown from 120 to 200.

Practical Action in Kenya facilitated this shift by working with local waste groups like Ondiek to improve waste management and business practices, and connecting them to recyclers and large waste aggregators.

Support from our partner Riviera Travel is helping strengthen these circular economy systems, creating jobs for young people while reducing pollution flowing into rivers and Lake Victoria.

Yesterday was International Waste Pickers Day, a reminder of the essential role waste workers, including women, play in keeping our towns clean and supporting sustainable livelihoods.

Recognising their contribution must go hand in hand with strengthening the systems they work in.

Last week, we facilitated efforts led by waste pickers and other partners in Kakamega to improve how the local waste system functions.

First, we teamed up with the Kakamega Waste Handlers Association, Kakamega County, Red Cross Society , Anglican Development Service and Health Promoters to facilitate a community clean-up and awareness drive.

Residents learnt sustainable waste management practices, including separating waste at source and why they should enrol for collection services. A growing number of homes are putting this message into practice.

Kakamega County Executive Committee Member for Water, Environment, Natural Resources and Climate Change Peninah Mukabane led this activity.

The aim is to facilitate a commercially viable circular economy in which organic waste is recycled into fertiliser by our partner Regen Organics for sale to local farmers, while residents receive affordable waste collection services.

Second, in partnership with the National Gender and Equality Commission and other partners, we facilitated training for waste collectors and aggregators on compliance, safety and leadership

Participants identified actions such as reviewing licensing status, improving record keeping, conducting safety assessments and promoting women’s leadership within their associations.

This work is supported by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Denmark and the Danida Green Business Partnerships / Danida Market Development Partnerships.

In Kakamega, our partner, Regen Organics, has started processing organic waste into fertiliser for sale to local farmers.

This marks a key step towards a commercially viable, circular economy model for organic waste management to reduce environmental pollution and create economic opportunities for residents.

An adequate and reliable supply of quality organic waste, including from Kakamega households, for processing is critical for the model's success.

This requires more homes to sort waste and enrol in collection services provided by informal waste collectors and other service providers.

To facilitate locally led behaviour change on waste management, Regen Organics, informal waste handlers, the Kakamega County Government and Practical Action in Kenya recently participated in radio talk shows.

The discussions engaged Kakamega residents on the environmental, economic and health benefits of sustainable waste management, while reinforcing the central role of households in expanding gains already achieved.

Talk show participants included:

✅ Michael Lwoyelo, Managing Director, Regen Organics

✅ Joseph Ouko, Factory Manager, Regen Organics

✅ Peter Mathia, Environmental Safeguards Specialist, Kakamega County

✅ Irene Mutsaji and Alex Odera, Kakamega waste collectors

✅ Trizzah Abuya and Daniel Mwakha, Practical Action in Kenya

The radio talk shows are part of wider efforts to facilitate awareness and adoption of improved waste management practices among Kakamega residents, ensuring the circular economy model is viable.

This work is supported by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Denmark and the Danida Green Business Partnerships / Danida Market Development Partnerships.
