Meet Flora Wanja, a 53-year-old farmer from Siakago, Embu County.
For years, Flora relied on a diesel-powered water pump, which was expensive to run.
After taking part in Productive Uses of Energy (PUE) and Business Development trainings facilitated by Practical Action in Kenya’s Women in Energy Enterprises in Kenya (WEEK III) project, she switched to a solar-powered system.
Since then, her production costs have gone down, and her horticultural yields have improved.
Flora has also become a clean energy agent, promoting and selling pico and home system solar technologies in her community. More households are now adopting solar power, and she is earning an income from sales.
“Since I switched to solar, my community has embraced it. Many are now buying solar-powered devices and installing solar panels at their homes. This has created a steady source of income for me through sales.”
