The data from the COUNT ME IN Study tells a story that many transgender and gender-diverse persons in Kenya know all too well. Barriers to civil registration and identity documentation can limit access to healthcare, education, employment, justice, and other essential services. Through this study, we sought to understand these challenges and generate evidence that can inform policy and practice.

As we share these findings, we invite policymakers, institutions, civil society, and communities to reflect on what it means to build systems that recognize, include, and serve everyone.

This Madaraka Day, we honor the generations of Kenyans who fought for self-determination, justice, and the right to shape their own future.

We also recognize those who continue that work today, human rights defenders, community organizers, activists, and ordinary citizens who advocate for a Kenya where everyone can live with dignity, equality, and freedom.

We further honor those who stand on the frontlines today, demanding justice and the protection of the lives and rights of women and children.

Madaraka reminds us that freedom must be protected, expanded, and made accessible to all. As we celebrate the progress made, we recommit ourselves to building a country where every person is seen, valued, and able to participate fully in society.

We extend our heartfelt gratitude to all our partners, allies, researchers, advocates, community members, and stakeholders who joined us for the launch of the COUNT ME IN Study: Assessing Civil Registration Systems for Transgender and Gender Diverse Persons in Kenya.

This study marks an important step towards understanding and addressing the barriers that transgender and gender-diverse persons face in accessing civil registration and identity documentation. These rights are fundamental to dignity, recognition, and equal participation in society. Through its research and policy work, Jinsiangu continues to advance evidence-based advocacy that promotes the rights and well-being of Inters*x, Transgender, and Gender Non-Conforming (ITGNC) persons in Kenya.

Your presence, engagement, and commitment to advancing inclusion and legal recognition made this launch meaningful. Thank you for standing with us as we continue to champion visibility, recognition, and justice for transgender and gender-diverse communities.

Because everyone deserves to be counted, recognized, and affirmed.

Every person deserves to live with dignity, recognition, and equal protection under the law. Yet, transgender and inters*x persons in Kenya continue to face barriers that limit access to healthcare, education, employment, justice, and legal recognition.

In our latest statement, we highlight the urgent need for legislation protecting transgender and inters*x persons in Kenya, and why legal recognition is essential to safety, inclusion, and human dignity. We also call for stronger protections against discrimination and for policies that ensure no one is left behind.

We invite you to read the statement, reflect on these realities, and stand with us in advocating for a more just and inclusive Kenya for all.

As Kenya faces growing concern over child disappearances, abductions, and trafficking, International Missing Children’s Day reminds us that child safety cannot be treated as an afterthought.

Every day 26 children go missing in Kenya. Between January 2025 and March 2026, Kenya recorded over 10,500 child protection cases, including nearly 2,000 abductions.

If a child goes missing, report immediately. 📞 Call 116 free child helpline. Protecting children is a collective responsibility.
