Representation to the CSG Team at Machakos County Government on Drought Findings and Preparedness

Today, we had the opportunity to represent and present drought findings affecting the Eastern region of Kenya to the CSG team at the Machakos County Government offices. The engagement was conducted in collaboration with the National Drought Management Authority (NDMA) and other key stakeholders.

The discussion focused on the current drought situation, its impact on livelihoods, food security, water access, and the socio-economic wellbeing of vulnerable communities. Particular attention was given to the increasing frequency and severity of drought cycles and the urgent need for coordinated, sustainable interventions.

Beyond highlighting the findings, we emphasized practical and long-term adaptation strategies, including:

Strengthening early warning systems and community-based drought monitoring

Promoting climate-smart agriculture and sustainable water harvesting technologies

Enhancing community awareness on drought preparedness and resilience building

Supporting alternative livelihoods to reduce overreliance on rain-fed systems

Improving coordination between county governments, NDMA, and community structures

Community sensitization remains critical. Building local capacity on drought preparedness, resource management, and risk reduction will ensure that communities are not only responsive to emergencies but also proactive in building resilience.

We appreciate the Machakos County Government and NDMA for their commitment to collaborative action and sustainable solutions. Together, we can strengthen preparedness frameworks and safeguard communities against future climate-related shocks.

An estimated 703,000 people die by su***de every year, with many more attempting it (2). According to the World Health Organization (WHO), Kenya records approximately four su***de deaths daily, with a crude su***de rate of 6.1 per 100,000 people and an age-standardized rate of 11.0 per 100,000 (2).

September is recognized as the World Su***de Prevention Month, observed under the theme “Breaking the Silence, Building Hope.” In line with this global campaign, Zwara Arts, in collaboration with Mental Health Champions and other stakeholders, joined hands to commemorate the day.

The activities included a mental health awareness walk, starting from Moi Avenue Primary School, passing through Upper Hill, Kenyatta Hospital, and University Way, and finally culminating back at Moi Avenue Primary School, where awareness and reflection sessions were held.
