MTAA IMPACT — RAIN SAFETY ADVISORY
Protecting Our Streets. Together. | Nairobi
1. Never Cross Flooded Bridges
If a bridge or road is submerged, turn around immediately. Fast-moving water can sweep away vehicles and pedestrians in seconds. No destination is worth your life.
2. Avoid Flooded Roads
Just 15cm of water can stall your engine. 30cm can carry away a small vehicle. Always choose higher ground routes and never underestimate the depth of floodwater.
3. Beware of Lightning
Seek shelter inside a solid building or vehicle during a thunderstorm. Stay away from tall trees, open fields, and metal structures. If caught outside, crouch low — never lie flat on the ground.
4. Stay Indoors If Possible
During heavy downpours, remain indoors. If you must go out, carry a raincoat, wear rubber-soled shoes, and watch your step on slippery surfaces and pavements.
5. Monitor Weather Updates
Check Kenya Meteorological Department (KMD) forecasts before travelling. Share updates with your neighbours, especially the elderly and those without smartphones.
6. Secure Your Important Documents
Store vital documents — IDs, birth certificates, medical records — in waterproof bags or on elevated shelves in case of flooding inside your home.
7. Protect Children & the Elderly
Keep children away from swollen drains, rivers, and open sewers. Always accompany elderly persons when navigating wet and slippery terrain.
8. Prepare an Emergency Kit
Keep a go-bag ready at all times: a torch, bottled water, a first-aid kit, a phone charger, and a 3-day food supply in case of extended flooding or power outages.
