BUSINESS LESSONS!

Good morning, dear friends and fellow servants of God.

My name is Stephen J O , and I thank God for the privilege of being part of this platform, It is an honor to fellowship with you all.

I serve with Oasis Builders Outreach Ministries Kenya, and I believe that through this network we shall continue building and sharpening one another for God’s glory.

Today, I would like to share briefly on business and work. My desire is to encourage us to develop a biblical understanding of business because there has often been an ideological misunderstanding in many denominations and religious circles. Many people view business and ministry as two separate entities.

However, from Scripture, we discover that business is not separate from ministry—it is an extension of it. The Bible never treats work and faith as two different worlds. God cares about how we earn, manage, and use our resources because everything ultimately belongs to Him.

The Scriptures declare that “The earth is the Lord’s, and everything in it” (Psalm 24:1). Even the talents and abilities we possess are gifts from God. Therefore, I would like to share three biblical reasons why believers should engage in business and work.

1. Business Is God’s Idea: It Is Stewardship

The first truth we must understand is that business is God’s idea. It is an expression of stewardship.

When believers engage in business or work, they are managing God’s resources faithfully. Work is not merely an economic activity—it is an act of worship.

Colossians 3:23 reminds us:

“Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for human masters.”

Whether you are a farmer, doctor, lawyer, teacher, driver, business owner, office worker, or even a house helper, Scripture calls you to serve wholeheartedly as unto the Lord.

The apostles Paul and Peter repeatedly encouraged servants to serve faithfully, knowing they were ultimately serving Christ.

We also see this principle in Genesis 1:28 and Genesis 2:15. Before sin entered the world, God placed Adam in the Garden of Eden to cultivate and care for it. Adam was not created for idleness; he was entrusted with responsibility.

This teaches us an important truth:

Work existed before the Fall.

The curse affected the difficulty of work, but work itself was part of God’s original design. Therefore, work is honorable and business is a divine assignment.

1. Business Is a Platform for Provision and Generosity

Secondly, business provides a platform for provision and generosity.

Healthy businesses create employment, provide for families, support communities, and finance the work of God’s Kingdom.

Imagine a church filled with thriving, God-fearing business people. Such believers can:

* Care for widows.
* Sponsor orphans.
* Build schools.
* Plant churches.
* Support missionaries.
* Advance the Gospel across nations.

The Apostle Paul wrote in Ephesians 4:28:

“Let the thief no longer steal, but rather let him labor, doing honest work with his own hands, so that he may have something to share with anyone in need.”

Notice God’s purpose for prosperity.

We do not work merely to provide for ourselves. We work so that we may become channels of blessing to others.

Likewise, Deuteronomy 8:18 teaches us that:

“It is God who gives you the ability to produce wealth.”

God gives us the ability to create wealth so that His covenant may be established and His purposes fulfilled on earth.

Paul himself demonstrated this principle. He worked with his own hands so that he would not become a burden to others and was even able to support those ministering alongside him.

1. Business Is a Mission Field

Finally, business is a mission field.

While pastors spend much of their time ministering within church buildings, the majority of believers spend most of their lives in the marketplace.

For someone working 12 hours a day, 6 days a week, that amounts to approximately 72 hours every week in the workplace.

That is their mission field.

This is why churches must intentionally equip believers to serve God in the marketplace with excellence, integrity, honesty, and the guidance of the Holy Spirit.

Whether someone works in a bank, Security, Military, school, farm, office, market, or business enterprise, they are called to influence others for Christ, both locally and internationally

Jesus declared:

“You are the light of the world… You are the salt of the earth.”

Our Christian witness should be visible through our character, excellence, honesty, compassion, and commitment to God.

The Bible gives us many examples of marketplace ministers:

* Lydia, a successful merchant dealing in purple cloth.
* Priscilla and Aquila, tentmakers who partnered with Paul in ministry.
* Daniel, who served faithfully in the king’s administration while remaining uncompromising in his faith.

These individuals demonstrated that it is possible to glorify God while excelling in business and professional life.

At Oasis, we often teach that business should be viewed as a platform for ministry.

Every customer, client, colleague, employee, or business partner represents an opportunity to demonstrate the love of Christ and share the Gospel.

Whether you own a grocery shop, manage a hotel, operate a transport business, or work in an office, God has strategically placed you there for Kingdom influence.

Business should not merely be about making profits—although profit is important. It should also be about advancing God’s Kingdom through godly influence.

Conclusion

As I conclude today, let us embrace God’s perspective on work and business.

Business is not secular when it is surrendered to God. It is stewardship, provision, generosity, and ministry combined.

May we become faithful stewards who honor God through our work, serve people with excellence, and use every opportunity to advance His Kingdom.

I am humbled by this piece and hereby recommend it for a slow reading

A man’s character is his fate

Heraclitus Thomas Jefferson, the third President of the United States (US), said:

“Nothing can stop the man with the right mental attitude from achieving his goal; nothing on earth can help the man with the wrong mental attitude”

As a clergyman, I have watched pitiably how people self-sabotage themselves by seeking spiritual solutions to character-deficit issues.

They look around at everybody as suspects for their predicaments when their greatest demons lurk within them - their character.

What we often call our destiny is truly our character, and since that character can change, then destiny can be altered. Character is destiny.

Is prayer actually EVERYTHING?

Many would begin to argue back and forth on this intriguing question, but my main purpose of writing this piece is not to get involved in arguments.

Arguments don’t improve the validity of a ‘truth;’ they only determine how long it would take before you realise it._

Most people believe that we can pray ourselves to success and get away with virtually anything if we become a stickler to some prayer routines.

There is no amount of spiritual penance that can substitute for character.

Sometimes, you need character, not prayer.

Dutch Sheets said:

‘Prayer is not a check request asking for things from God; it is a deposit slip - a way of depositing God’s character into our bankrupt souls.”

British writer and politician Thomas Macaulay (1800-1859) said: “The measure of a man’s character is what he would do if he knew he never would be found out.”

I have often said that what would ultimately destroy a man going to high places in life is not really the enemies that are waiting for him there, but the character that followed him there.

I want to emphatically underline the fact that this write-up is not meant to trivialise prayers in any way.

I have observed that many people take character for granted while overzealously tuning on into their spiritual mode.

We have become so spiritually in tune through prayers that we neglect the place of character and our relationship with people.

Many are actually ‘heavenly’ bound, but with no earthly relevance.

You can speak with spiritual eloquence, pray in public, and maintain a holy appearance, but it is your behaviour and character that will actually trigger the manifestation of all that God has for you.

You must learn to treat people with courtesy.

The Shunammite woman must have been praying for a child all through her life.

By being hospitable to a man of God, she eventually got her much-awaited miracle.

It wasn’t prayer that opened the door for her; it was her character.

Assuming she wasn’t hospitable, she would have missed a critical miracle.

Many times, we pray, fast and bind demons that don’t exist when our real demons are just our greatly flawed character.

Many have insulted people who were divinely placed and orchestrated to help them fulfil their destiny.

Some people are keeping malice with their destiny helpers.

Treat people with respect.
Treat strangers with courtesy.

Never look down on anybody.

God can use anyone to change your story.

Abigail Van Buren said:

“The best index to a person’s character is how he treats people who can’t do him any good, and how he treats people who can’t fight back.”_

You can easily judge the character of a man by how he treats those who can do nothing for him.

The way we treat people we think can’t help or hurt us, like housekeepers, waiters, and secretaries, tells more about our character than how we treat people we think are important. _

How do you treat people?_

One of the most impressive architectural feats and the greatest military defence project in history is the Great Wall of China. In 1987, UNESCO designated the Great Wall, a World Heritage site, and a popular controversial claim that emerged in the 20th century, which holds that it is the only man-made structure that is visible from space

Originally conceived by Emperor Qin Shi Huang (c. 259-210 B.C.) in the 3rd Century B.C. as a means of preventing incursions from Mongolians and barbarian nomads into the Chinese Empire, the wall is one of the most extensive construction projects ever completed.

History has it that when the ancient Chinese decided to live in peace, they made the Great Wall of China; they thought no one could climb it due to its height.

During the first 100 years of its existence, the Chinese were invaded thrice and every time, the hordes of enemy infantry had no need of penetrating or climbing over the wall, because each time, they bribed the guards and came through the doors.

The Chinese built the wall but forgot the character - building of the wall-guards.

Though the Great Wall has over the years become a powerful symbol of the country’s enduring strength and spirit, it has actually been a good reminder to the Chinese of the superiority of human character.

How many people and homes had been invaded, looted, and devastated by the enemy through the bribery of ego, self-indulgence, insincerity, and unfaithfulness.

The scriptures say , ‘While men slept, the enemy came and sowed tares among the wheat, and went his way."

The Chinese realised much later that the best defence against the enemy is not a fortified wall but a fortified character

Thus, the building of human character comes before the building of anything else

Prayer is very important in our lives, but it isn't EVERYTHING!

Build relationships, build your family, and don’t ever forget that God will always use man.

Be mindful of your words and how you speak to people.

Work seriously on your character and attitude towards life.

I want to say emphatically that character is not optional; and so, is the place of prayers

it is sacrosanct to the future that God has planned for you and your home.

I have seen people pray tirelessly and completely forget that character matters a lot.

The greatest fraud in life is religion without character.

A man without character is recklessly alive.

William Shakespeare captured it succinctly when he said:
‘The fault is not in our stars, but in ourselves’

Peter Schutz, the former chief executive officer of Porsche, said: “

HIRE CHARACTER; TRAIN SKILLS*.”

Lastly, back in the days when Germany was divided, a huge wall separated East and West Berlin.

One day, some people in East Berlin took a truck load of garbage and dumped it on the West Berlin side.

The people of West Berlin could have done the same thing, but they didn't.

Instead, they took a truck load of canned foods, bread, milk, and other provisions, and neatly stacked it on the East Berlin side.

On top of this stack, they placed the sign:

‘EACH GIVES WHAT HE HAS"

How very true!

You can only give what you have.

Be sincere!

What do you have inside of you?

Is it hate or love?
Violence or peace*?
Death or life?
Capacity to build or capacity to destroy?

What have you acquired over the years?

Team spirit or pull down architecture ?

These words are worth reading over and over; they are worth our meditation

More importantly,they are worth sharing with younger people

Let us build our Character.

Years ago, I went to Nsukka to mark WAEC exam scripts, using the university as our marking center. After we finished, it was time to head back home. I crossed over to Asaba, hoping that once I got to the highway there, I would be able to find someone who could give me a lift back to Lagos.
I stood by the roadside, but every single vehicle I waved at just ignored me and zoomed right past. Then, a brand-new Mercedes-Benz—the kind they used to call "Obokun" in those days—came down the road. It was so beautiful that I figured there was no way a car like that would stop for anyone. Even though I raised my hand, I didn't even bother to wave it down properly. As expected, the car zoomed past.
But all of a sudden, the driver slammed on the brakes and reversed all the way back to where I was standing. He rolled down the window and asked, *"You want a lift?"*
I replied, *"Yes, sir."*
*"Where are you going?"*
*"Lagos."*
He said, *"Get in."*
There was already someone sitting with him in the front passenger seat, so the entire back seat—what we call the "owner's corner"—was completely empty. He opened the door, I put my small bag inside, and I sat down in the fully air-conditioned car. As we drove, the driver and his friend just talked among themselves and ignored me. From the way they spoke, you could tell they were people who had just returned from America.
Eventually, we made it to Lagos and pulled into a petrol station in Ikeja. The driver turned to me and said, *"Excuse me, I need to fill up at the gas station here."*
I answered, *"Yes, sir. We are already in Lagos, sir. You have tried so much for me."* I fully expected him to drop me off right there at the petrol station so I could find a taxi the rest of the way to Surulere.
Instead, he said, *"No, I'm going to take you all the way home."*
He filled his tank, drove me directly to Surulere where I lived, and only then did he say, *"Bye now,"* and drove off.
The Lord asked me to tell this story to someone here today. He says: **"I have already started helping you, and I will help you all the way to the very end."**
