Marking under the theme “The People’s Power, Constitutionalism and Democracy Ahead of 2027,” stakeholders reflected on how Kenya can safeguard peaceful and inclusive elections.

Key priorities include:

We join fellow defenders of the Constitution in Nairobi to commemorate , under the theme: “The People’s Power, Constitutionalism and Democracy.”

Speaking at the event, our Head of Litigation, Chris Kerkering, reflected on the progressive character of Kenya’s 2010 Constitution and its firm foundation in the sovereignty of the people.

Drawing from the Preamble, he emphasised that the Constitution represents the collective commitment of Kenyans to sovereignty, independence, self-governance and democratic participation.

Our Constitution establishes a clear relationship between the people and those entrusted with public power: decisions affecting our country must ultimately be rooted in the consent, participation and will of the people.

We stand together with Tisa Kenya, Uraia, Mzalendo, Transparency International Kenya, Amnesty International Kenya, Kenya Human Rights Commission, and Ni Sisi Defenders Coalition in reaffirming our commitment to constitutionalism, democracy, human rights and people-centred governance.

16 years on, the Constitution belongs to the people. Let us defend it, live it and uphold it.

Yesterday, CPDF was well represented by Deputy Executive Director Ruth Bollo at a powerful gathering convened by Nerima Wako to discuss the future of women’s participation and leadership amid a shrinking democratic space.

The conversation brought together women committed to protecting democratic gains, strengthening civic participation and ensuring that women remain at the forefront of shaping society.

Ruth Bollo represented CPDF in the important conversation, reaffirming the organisation’s commitment to inclusive democracy, women’s leadership and meaningful participation in public affairs.

The message from the gathering was clear: women must continue to speak up, lead and actively shape the democratic future of our country

Documents have no power on their own. People give them power.

The Constitution only comes alive when citizens demand accountability and insist that leaders respect it. Its strongest defenders are ordinary people, community organisers, journalists, auditors, and citizens who refuse to normalise abuses of power.

Accountability is not something we wait for. It is something we practise.
