New evidence from Somalia and the Mixed Migration Centre ( ) provides fresh insights into the journeys of refugees and other persons on the move travelling along the Eastern Route through Somalia.

Following nearly 700 refugees and other people on move over six months, the study highlights the protection risks people continue to face while in transit, but also the positive impact that access to international protection can have. Respondents who obtained refugee status were more likely to choose to remain safely in Somalia or pursue legal pathways, demonstrating how access to protection can reduce the need for dangerous onward journeys.

The findings also underscore the need to strengthen protection services, legal pathways, and humanitarian assistance for refugees and people on the move in Somalia, particularly for women and others facing heightened vulnerabilities. They reinforce the importance of ensuring that people on the move can access safety, protection, and support where they are.

More than 70,000 refugees live in Addis Ababa.

Within a metropolis of millions of people, some of the challenges displaced families face can be difficult to see.

Refugee-led organizations can help bring those needs closer to the response.

Shadia Abdel Jabbar came to Ethiopia as a refugee from Yemen. Through Ethio Friends, the organization she founded, refugees from different communities are helping identify needs, supporting families and working alongside Ethiopian host communities.

Through the Partnership, UNHCR has provided practical capacity building to help strengthen that work.

“We got this opportunity as a training. Training, but action,” Shadia says.

And she describes the larger idea even more simply:

“Host community and refugees, we are together. We work together.”
