CHWs are the backbone of their communities, delivering primary care to those at the last mile. CHW Champions Network (CHW CN) is an umbrella whose main agenda is uniting Community Health Workers to pursue health equity and social justice. The CHW CN was founded in December 2021 after several months of planning and organizing by Community Health Workers (CHWs) across geography, ethnicity, sector and experience to support communities to achieve health, equity and social justice. The CHWCN was created with a driven purpose of sharing life experience, trust, compassion, cultural and value alignment with the communities where we live and serve. Our Mission
To unify the voices of the community health workers and strengthen the profession's capacity to promote healthy communities. Our Vision

Promoting self-actualization and self-advocacy among community health workers.

Ensuring fair treatment, access, opportunity advancement and outcomes for individual and communities.

Promoting the efforts of the community health workers, and the communities in which they work to create a shared vision and direction for the future.

Building trusted relationships based on honoring the inherent value and contribution of every person irrespective of socioeconomic class, religion, race, national origin, language spoken, immigration status, abilities or disabilities, age, s*x, s*xual orientation, and gender identity or expression.

Encouraging collaboration among community health workers to promote a common professional identity regardless of job title or work-setting.

Every day, Community Health Promoters take healthcare closer to families — from disease prevention and immunization to maternal and child health, NCD support, sanitation, emergency response and community engagement.

Today, we celebrate this CHW Advocate and every CHP across Kenya who continues to make a difference, one household at a time.

Our communities are healthier because CHPs are there.

💙 COMMUNITY HEALTH PROMOTERS: THE LIFELINE OF OUR COMMUNITIES

Behind every healthier community is a Community Health Promoter who shows up — listening, educating, identifying health risks, supporting families, making referrals, promoting immunization, and connecting households to the health system.

From health education and disease prevention to maternal and child health, immunization, sanitation, chronic disease management, emergency support, and community engagement, CHPs are working every day at the heart of primary healthcare.

They are not just health workers in the community. They are trusted members of the communities they serve.

Today, we celebrate Jane Nelima Wafula a dedicated CHW Advocate and the thousands of Community Health Promoters across Kenya who continue to serve with commitment, compassion and courage.

At ACHVO-K, we believe that those closest to communities must have a meaningful voice in shaping the policies, systems and investments that affect their work.

NOTHING ABOUT US WITHOUT US
WHO REGULATES THE COMMUNITY HEALTH PROMOTER WORKFORCE?
A regulatory framework affecting Community Health Promoters must meaningfully involve the people whose practice it regulates.
CHPs should have a voice in discussions concerning:
- practice standards;
- competency;
- training;
- registration;
- professional conduct;
- continuing development; and
- regulatory governance.
This is not about giving CHPs control over regulation.
It is about ensuring that regulation is informed by the realities of community-based practice.

ACHVO-K therefore supports meaningful CHP representation and structured consultation within the regulatory framework.
Those closest to the work must have a meaningful voice in shaping the framework that governs the work.

ACHVO-K does not support wholesale deletion of the CHP Bill because the concerns identified can be addressed through amendment, harmonization, clarification and appropriate transitional safeguards.

WHY ACHVO-K DOES NOT SUPPORT WHOLESALE DELETION
The issue is not whether the Bill can be improved. It can.

ACHVO-K recognizes that legislation must be scrutinized, improved and harmonized with existing laws.

We also recognize that aspects of the Community Health Promoters Bill require:

Clarification;
Amendment;
Harmonization with the Primary Health Care Act, 2023;
Refinement of institutional arrangements; and
Stronger transitional safeguards.

But these concerns do not, in our view, require the wholesale deletion of the Bill.

A legislative framework can be improved without abandoning its underlying objectives.

Where there is duplication, harmonize.

Where there are weaknesses, amend.

Where there are institutional concerns, clarify.

Where serving CHPs may be disadvantaged, provide fair transition and Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL).

Where governance arrangements require refinement, strengthen them.

ACHVO-K's position is therefore clear:

We support improving the Bill—not abandoning the legislative framework altogether.

Our advocacy is not about defending every word of the Bill.

It is about protecting the principles and outcomes that matter to Community Health Promoters and the communities they serve.
