Yatta Beekeepers Limited is showing what this can look like in practice by transforming fragile landscapes in Kenyaโ€™s arid and semi-arid regions into climate-smart beekeeping zones that support communities, biodiversity, and local economies.

The enterprise was recognized among the Top 10 winners of the In-Country YouthADAPT Challenge 2025 and is now leveraging support from the programme to scale innovative solutions that strengthen climate resilience for vulnerable communities.

The programme seeks to identify, fund, and support youth-led enterprises developing innovative, scalable, and locally relevant climate adaptation solutions across ๐Ÿ‡ฐ๐Ÿ‡ช Kenya, ๐Ÿ‡น๐Ÿ‡ฟ Tanzania, ๐Ÿ‡ท๐Ÿ‡ผ Rwanda, ๐Ÿ‡ฌ๐Ÿ‡ญ Ghana, and ๐Ÿ‡ณ๐Ÿ‡ฌ Nigeria. Implemented in Kenya by Kenya Climate Innovation Center (KCIC) under the African Adaptation Acceleration Program led by the Global Center on Adaptation, the initiative goes beyond funding to include de-risking support, mentorship, and ecosystem linkages that help enterprises move from promising ideas to scalable climate solutions with measurable impact.

From climate-smart apiculture and ecosystem restoration to market access and green job creation, the story of Yatta Beekeepers highlights the transformative potential of locally led climate adaptation solutions across Africa.

We recently hosted representatives from the Kenya National Innovation Agency (KeNIA) and the National Research & Innovation Fund (NRIF) of The Gambia) for a strategic engagement on strengthening enterprise support organisations (ESOs) and advancing innovation ecosystems in Kenya and The Gambia.

At the centre of the discussion was a shared recognition that innovation hubs, incubators, and venture builders are the critical first line of support for startups, and that the effectiveness of these structures significantly shapes ecosystem performance.

Drawing on our experience supporting climate-focused enterprises, we shared practical lessons on venture development, programme design, and strengthening ecosystem linkages.

Key focus areas included strengthening ESOs to improve their effectiveness, enhancing governance and long-term sustainability, and promoting clearer specialisation across the innovation ecosystem.

We also explored opportunities to strengthen ESOs and improve coordination so they can better support startups at scale.

Kenya Climate Innovation Center (KCIC) remains committed to partnerships that strengthen innovation systems and accelerate climate-resilient enterprises across Africa.

Kenyaโ€™s growing animal feed shortage is placing increasing pressure on smallholder livestock farmers, as rising demand, inconsistent supply, and climate-related pressures continue to strain the sector.

In Lamu County, Mpeketoni Mega Women Organization, chose to respond to the challenge by venturing into animal feed production. With support from the Kenya Climate Innovation Centerโ€™s , the group transformed a local challenge into a growing business opportunity.

What began with poultry feed production has since expanded into feed for dairy cattle and goats, alongside investments in egg incubation and edible oil processing. Today, the group is creating jobs, supporting local farmers, and planning to expand its market beyond Lamu County.

What began as prototype development is now a commercial reality, with Carbon Zero Mobility (CZM) Ltd demonstrating how electric motorbikes are reshaping transport in Kenya.

Founded in 2021 by Patrick Kimathi and David Ngaracu, the company began as an early-stage startup developing electric motorbike prototypes while refining its product and understanding the needs of boda boda operators and delivery services.

With support from the Kenya Climate Innovation Center (KCIC) under the , CZM was able to strengthen its product, test its market readiness, and build the systems needed for commercialisation.

Today, the company is assembling and distributing its Dominion electric motorbikes, generating early revenue, and expanding its operational capacity through improved systems, team growth, and market entry strategy.

Garithe Mangrove Conservation and Nuts Value Addition is a community-based organization that began in 2009 as a small self-help group in Garithe, Kilifi County. At the time, coconut farmers faced serious challenges. They lacked an operations facility, which prevented them from getting their products certified. At the same time, nuts were purchased at extremely low prices, as little as KES 2โ€“5 per nut. Mature coconuts without water were often discarded as waste.

Determined to add value to their harvest, the group began processing coconut oil manually, despite having little to no technical skills. At their peak, they could only produce about 20 litres of oil per month.

In 2023, the Kenya Climate Innovation Center (KCIC), through the , partnered with the group providing vital training on coconut value addition, product marketing, and financial record-keeping. The programme also facilitated market linkages and training to support certification by the Kenya Bureau of Standards (KEBS). This marked a turning point for the group.

Today, the group produces over 600 litres of coconut oil every week and employs 42 men and women from the local community. KCIC also supported the construction of an operations facility and the purchase of a cold press machine, significantly increasing efficiency and freeing up time for the women to focus on their homes.

โ€œBefore Agribiz, our incomes were low. With better access to markets, our sales have increased. KCICโ€™s support has helped us build the capacity to sustain ourselves and keep growing beyond the programme.โ€

Each individual processes around 100 coconuts daily, earning up to KES 400 per day transforming livelihoods, one nut at a time.

In Kenya, rising input costs and increasing organic waste continue to challenge farmers. Harcourt Agri-Eco Farm located in Murang'a is addressing both by converting organic waste into high-protein animal feed and nutrient-rich organic fertilizer through black soldier fly farming.

With support from the , Harcourt invested in a solar-powered greenhouse, fly-rearing infrastructure, and processing equipment, strengthening production capacity and improving consistency in supply.

What Has Changed
The impact of these improvements is already visible across the value chain:
1. Farmers can access more affordable, locally produced animal feed and organic fertilizer.

2. Organic waste from surrounding communities is actively collected and repurposed into productive use.

3. Production systems are more efficient, allowing the enterprise to meet growing demand.

4. Employment opportunities have been created in waste collection, production, and distribution.

This is a practical example of how circular solutions can reduce costs for farmers while improving environmental outcomes.

Tomorrow, 23rd April 2026, we will convene at the REREC Kitui Energy Center to launch and hand over a DREEM solar demonstration site to the community.

The site will serve as a live classroom for horticulture farmers in Makueni and Kitui counties to witness and learn how solar works, and how they can adopt it in the future.

The event will also include a peer learning session for farmers to share experiences, alongside an exhibition by solar enterprises showcasing new technologies for farmers to explore and even purchase.

We look forward to a day of learning, exchange, and practical solutions.
