Nzambi Matee, founder of Gjenge Makers, turns plastic waste into paving blocks using machines her team built themselves.

Getech Maxnav Ltd is a biofuel company that turns sawdust into briquettes, an alternative to charcoal and firewood. By putting sawdust that would otherwise be dumped or burned to use, the company keeps waste out of the environment and eases pressure on forests cut for fuel. It also creates jobs in the local community.

Through the Sustainable Waste Innovation for a Future in Transition (SWIFT) Programme, KCIC provided the company with a dryer that has increased its capacity to dry raw materials and boosted production. Alongside the dryer, the company has received technical assistance, business mentorship and networking opportunities, as well as an Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) system to streamline its operations.

With bills of up to KSh 500,000 a month and blackouts that slowed processing, damaged equipment and increased operational costs, Mogotio Dairy Cooperative knew solar was the answer to its power problem. What stood in the way was the upfront cost.

The , implemented by Kenya Climate Innovation Center(KCIC) with support from Mott Foundation , closed that gap.

Today the entire plant runs on solar. Lower costs and steady power mean Mogotio can process more milk into value-added products, create jobs and increase earnings for its 1,500 farmers.

As a mother in rural eastern Kenya, Norah Magero experienced firsthand how hard it was to get vaccines and other heat-sensitive medicines when she needed them. That experience became the starting point for a much bigger question: how do you build a cold-chain solution that actually works for the realities of African communities?

In this episode of the Sustainably Speaking-Africa, Tobias Belle, talks to Norah, co-founder and CEO of Drop Access, about the journey from identifying a real problem to building VacciBox, a portable, solar-powered cold-chain solution that gives rural clinics cold storage where there is none and keeps vaccines and other heat-sensitive medicines within the required temperature range on the road.

Vincent UBELING started Green at Mind Limited in Kakuma, Turkana County, with one goal: to give households a cleaner, more affordable way to cook. His answer was to turn metal waste into cookstoves.

In the early days, it was just Vincent and two teammates. Without registration, finding anyone willing to support the business was hard. That changed when they joined the . With technical assistance, the team registered, became fully compliant and began building the connections that would carry them forward. "When you're compliant, you can knock on any door, because you have papers to show," Vincent says. And they did. New partners, new grants and a production plant of their own followed.

Today, the team of three has grown to 29 people. Every month, they turn about 1.5 tonnes of metal waste into 300 stoves, including a double burner that lets families cook two meals at once while using 40% less fuel. Through 62 local distributors, the stoves reach homes in Turkana, Thika and Garissa.

Vincent isn't stopping there. By 2030, he wants to produce 60,000 stoves and see fewer people falling sick because of how they cook.
