Today, Federation of East African Freight Forwarders Associations - Feaffa participated in the validation workshop of the Logistics Performance Survey (LPS) 2024/2025 and the review of the Mombasa Port & Northern Corridor Community Charter (MPNCCC).
The discussions acknowledged notable improvements in port performance over time, particularly in increased cargo throughput and growth in TEUs handled at the Port of Mombasa—an encouraging signal of rising trade volumes and improving operational capacity.
However, the workshop also brought out critical findings on the remaining efficiency gaps across the corridor. It became clear that logistics challenges are less about isolated infrastructure constraints and more about coordination and process inefficiencies along the entire clearance chain.
Key findings highlighted that delays are often accumulated before, during, and after formal clearance processes, including extended dwell times, fragmented handovers, and disconnects between systems and actors across the logistics chain.
Discussions highlighted that inefficiencies across the corridor continue to manifest in prolonged transit times and cost escalation, driven by a mix of operational delays, coordination gaps, and systemic bottlenecks along the logistics chain.
The cost implications remain significant, with delays translating into measurable financial losses for both trucks and vessels, ultimately affecting the overall competitiveness of regional trade.
The workshop further underscored several cross-cutting issues, including inconsistent ex*****on across agencies, hidden cost drivers such as congestion, security constraints, fragmented performance accountability, system reliability challenges across multiple platforms, and limited uptake of available digital facilitation tools. Additional concerns were raised around multimodal integration, process visibility, and the need for stronger data-driven decision-making across the corridor.
A key takeaway was the need to revamp the Mombasa Port & Northern Corridor Community Charter (MPNCCC) to enhance efficiency in cargo clearance and improve the movement of goods along the Northern Corridor.
FEAFFA was represented by Andrew Onionga, Communications and Advocacy Officer.
The validation meeting was convened by the Shippers Council of Eastern Africa - SCEA, with support from TradeMark Africa.
