This Mother’s Day, we reflect on what progress in maternal health truly looks like.
Each number represents a mother who was able to plan, access care, and make it safely through pregnancy and childbirth. These outcomes are driven by sustained investment across the continuum of care; from family planning and antenatal services to safe delivery and postnatal support, ensuring women are supported at every stage.
This is how progress toward the ICPD+25 goal of zero preventable maternal deaths is realized. PS Kenya will continue to expand access to maternal health services, reaching women all the way to the last mile, working across public and private sectors, and ensuring more mothers survive pregnancy and childbirth.

Today, health outcomes are shaped by more than access to clinical care alone. They are influenced by the systems, communities, and support structures surrounding every woman throughout her pregnancy journey.

In this story, we explore how PS Kenya
is advancing a more integrated approach to maternal health; one that combines service delivery, community engagement, and behavior change to strengthen care beyond the health facility. From supporting informed decision-making at community level to improving access to dignified maternal care, the focus remains on creating safer and healthier outcomes for women and families across Kenya.

Because improving maternal health is not only a health priority, it is a social and cultural imperative that requires collective action, sustained investment, and stronger systems of support.

Stronger health data systems are helping improve care for mothers and communities in Bumula Sub-County.

PS Kenya joined partners in a data review meeting focused on improving how health information is recorded, updated, and used. This included strengthening documentation and reporting, ensuring timely data updates, improving tracking of essential health supplies, and supporting early registration of pregnant mothers so their care can be followed from the first visit through to completion.

Clear roles were reinforced, with supervisors supporting community health workers to keep information updated on time and maintain accurate reporting.

With more reliable and timely data, health teams are better able to track care, manage supplies, and ensure mothers receive consistent support throughout their pregnancy.

This progress is made possible through collaboration with partners, whose support continues to strengthen community health systems and frontline service delivery.

Through the Accelerate Program, is strengthening community-led solutions by investing in capacity building and peer learning among Community-Based Organizations.

Recently, The Link Empowerment Initiative (Githurai) and HIVA (Mandera) came together for an exchange visit, creating a powerful platform to share experiences, strategies, and lessons in advancing Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights and addressing Gender-Based Violence.

From urban informal settlements to arid and semi-arid regions, this exchange highlighted a critical truth: when communities connect, solutions scale.
Grounded in shared learning and lived experiences, these CBOs are:

✅Strengthening grassroots systems
✅Enhancing service delivery for underserved populations
✅Driving locally led, sustainable impact

This is how we move closer to achieving the ICPD25 Three Zeros. Investing in community-led organizations is not just impactful, it is essential. Lasting change happens when solutions are built with communities, not for them.

In Narok and Kajiado, floods and drought continue to disrupt access to safe water, driving disease outbreaks, increasing cases of diarrhoea, and placing additional pressure on already stretched health facilities.

is responding through an Emergency WASH initiative, working with County Health Management Teams to strengthen preparedness and deliver safe water solutions where they are needed most. This approach focuses on what works; bringing safe water treatment closer to households, supporting community health promoters to reach the last mile, and strengthening coordination so responses are faster and more effective.

For communities, this means fewer waterborne illnesses, improved hygiene practices, and reduced risk during climate-related shocks. It also means less strain on health facilities and lower costs associated with preventable disease.

Prevention remains the most effective response.

Through strengthening anticipatory WASH systems; combining low-cost water treatment, behavior change, and community-led distribution, PS Kenya is contributing to more resilient, responsive health systems in high-risk areas.

Sustained investment in these solutions will be critical to protecting communities, reducing public health risks, and ensuring safe water access during emergencies.

In Narok County, community-based organizations came together through the Program, funded by the Embassy of Denmark in Kenya, to strengthen how their work translates into measurable impact.

These organizations are not working in isolation. They are closing gaps in access, strengthening referral systems, and ensuring that women and families are connected to care earlier and more consistently. This has resulted in more women accessing reproductive health services, survivors of GBV being identified and supported and communities being more informed and better connected to care.
This is what stronger community systems look like; responsive, coordinated, and grounded in real-time realities.

The convening focused on sharpening this further, improving how data is captured, how community feedback is used, and how results inform decisions across counties.

The CBO's in attendance included:
✅Ndambul Mother to Mother
✅SEGO
✅Women Education for Health and Development (WOHED)
✅Community Development and Empowerment Actors (CODEA)
✅Community Based Organization Network Foundation (COBONEF)
✅Ewangan CBO
✅Kaloleni Young Mothers
✅Malindi Desire Initiative
✅Humanitarian International Voluntary Association (HIVA)
✅Health and Climate Actions in ASAL (HECA-ASAL)
✅The Link Empowerment
✅Ambassadors for Youth and Reproductive Health Program (AYARHEP)
✅Narok County Youth Council Network
✅Nkopiro Foundation
✅Now and Beyond

Together, they are advancing progress toward zero maternal deaths, zero GBV, and zero unmet need for contraception, turning community action into measurable results.

Sustained investment in these systems will be critical to expanding reach, strengthening outcomes, and ensuring no community is left behind.

In Nairobi, is supporting the scale-up of Community-Led Monitoring (CLM), ensuring that patient experiences directly inform how health services are delivered.

To date, 41 peer monitors have been engaged and CLM implemented across 125 health facilities, creating a structured way to capture, document, and act on both compliments and complaints from the community. This is strengthening accountability where it matters most because gaps in service delivery are identified earlier, feedback is translated into action and quality of care is improving.

County leadership has reaffirmed its commitment to sustain and scale CLM, including the establishment of a dedicated focal point to strengthen coordination and reporting. For patients, this means services that are more responsive, more transparent, and better aligned to their needs. For the health system, it means decisions are increasingly guided by real-time, community-driven evidence.

In the fight against TB, where early detection, treatment adherence, and trust in the system are critical, approaches like CLM are essential. Sustained investment in community-led accountability mechanisms will be key to improving TB outcomes and strengthening patient-centered care.
