Behind every journey is a mother who believed first.

From nurturing dreams at home to shaping stronger communities, mothers continue to move the world forward with courage, sacrifice and love. Today, we celebrate the women whose strength inspires generations and whose care keeps families and societies together.

Happy Mother’s Day to all the incredible mothers and mother figures. Your impact is immeasurable.

Today, we had the privilege of engaging Public Transport Operators in Makueni County through a training focused on disability inclusion in public transport.
The session created a much-needed space to listen, learn and reflect on how public transport can become safer, more dignified and more accessible for persons with disabilities.

Through shared lived experiences, practical learning, and honest conversations, participants explored:

✔ Understanding different types of disabilities
✔ Challenging myths and misconceptions around disability
✔ Building empathy through real experiences from persons with disabilities
✔ Practical ways transport operators can better support and interact with passengers with disabilities

We are encouraged by the immediate outcomes, including increased awareness among Public Transport SACCOs and more positive attitudes towards inclusive service delivery.

True inclusion begins when systems, services and people intentionally make space for everyone.

Special appreciation to the Government Of Makueni County leadership, the Public Transport SACCOs and people with lived experience in Makueni who participated and contributed to the conversation toward more inclusive mobility.

An equal ride does not always mean equal needs.

For a person using a wheelchair, boarding a matatu is not a simple step. It is a negotiation. With the vehicle. With the driver. With other passengers. With a system that was never designed with them in mind.

In Kenya, persons with disabilities face daily barriers in public transport, from inaccessible vehicles and bus stops to attitudes that make them feel like an inconvenience rather than a passenger with equal rights.

This is what Flone Initiative is working to change.
Through disability inclusion training for public transport operators, accessibility audits of transport corridors, policy advocacy with county governments and the onboarding of SACCOs to disability inclusion campaigns, we are building a transport system that sees every commuter and adjusts with dignity.

Because inclusion is not about making exceptions. It is about building systems where no exception is needed.

Every person deserves a journey that treats them as fully human.

80% of women in Nairobi have experienced or witnessed harassment while using public transport 🔴

Let that number sit for a moment.

Not a few women. Not occasionally. 8 in every 10 women, on the matatu, at the stage, on the way to work, on the way home.

This is not a minor inconvenience. It is a systemic failure, one that shapes where women choose to work, where they are willing to go and how freely they are able to move through the city that is supposed to serve them.

At Flone Initiative, we refuse to accept this as normal.
Through operator training, policy advocacy, safety audits and community engagement, we are working to make public transport in Kenya safer, more respectful and more dignified, for every woman who commutes, every single day.

Did you know that many barriers for commuters with disabilities are rooted in simple misunderstandings?

Today in Nakuru, we brought together leaders from Public Transport SACCOs to demystify myths and master practical tips for supporting commuters with disabilities with physical assistance and respectful communication.

SACCOs have officially signed up for our disability inclusion advocacy campaign! They are heading back equipped with branded seat covers, priority stickers, and the knowledge to make every journey inclusive.

At Flone, we continue to champion the right of every commuter, regardless of ability, to travel safely with dignity and respect.

Driver. Conductor. Passenger.
Whatever her role, she belongs in transport. And she deserves to be treated like it

As a driver who showed up when the industry said no. As a conductor who commands the route with confidence. As a passenger who simply wants to get home safely.
She deserves to be seen, valued, protected.

At Flone Initiative, supporting women in transport is not a campaign, it is the entire point.

Today, we continue our engagement with e-mobility companies, this time with Drivelectric e-mobility.

We are training the Drivelectric Inclusion Committee on Gender and Disability Awareness and Audit, building internal capacity to champion inclusion not just in policy documents, but in day-to-day operations, decisions and culture.

This is Empower Her Mobility in action. Commissioned by the German Government, implemented by GIZ through the WE4D programme, and showing up company by company across Kenya's growing e-mobility sector.

A greener transport sector means nothing if it is not also a fairer one. That is the standard Flone Initiative is holding the industry to.

Today, Flone Initiative has kicked off its formal engagement with e-mobility companies, starting with Kenya Bus Service Management Ltd (KBS).

We are training the KBS Inclusion Committee on Gender and Disability Awareness and Audit, building internal capacity to champion inclusion not just in policy documents, but in day-to-day operations, decisions and culture.

This is part of the Empower Her Mobility project, proudly commissioned by the German Government and implemented by GIZ through the Employment Promotion for Women for the Green Transformation in Africa (WE4D) programme.

As Kenya’s e-mobility sector grows, Flone Initiative is committed to ensuring that growth is equitable, inclusive and accountable; to women, to persons with disabilities and to every commuter who has been an afterthought for too long.
