May is Mental Health Awareness Month.

Mental health affects how we think, feel, relate, and function in our daily lives. Yet many people continue to suffer in silence because of stigma, discrimination, and limited access to support.

This month, Heraf Kenya joins the global movement to promote mental health awareness, dignity, inclusion, and access to care for all.
Mental health is not a privilege. It is a human right.

Today marked the successful conclusion of Heraf Kenya’s two-day Strategic Planning Workshop, where we reflected on the achievements of the 2022–2026 Strategic Plan and laid the foundation for the organization's next strategic phase.

The workshop brought together valuable perspectives and ideas focused on strengthening HERAF’s impact, accountability, innovation, sustainability, and responsiveness to the changing needs of beneficiaries, partners, and the broader operating environment.

As Heraf Kenya looks ahead, the insights generated during these sessions will guide the development of a forward-looking strategy that continues to align with our mission and vision while enhancing the delivery of high-impact programmes.

We thank all participants, partners, facilitators, and stakeholders for their active engagement and contribution throughout the two days. Together, we are shaping a stronger future for Heraf Kenya.

Heraf Kenya is proud to contribute to ongoing efforts to strengthen collective advocacy for mental health in Kenya.

As partners in the Strengthening Collective Advocacy and Policy Engagement Project, we joined stakeholders to review progress in disseminating the policy brief on overcoming barriers to accessing mental health services.

The discussions show progress is being made, but gaps in access, coordination, and implementation remain. Strengthening partnerships and translating policy into action will be critical to achieving meaningful change. youth Africa

Today marked the final day of our citizen-led discussions in Makadara Sub-County, Nairobi.

Over the past 4 days, we’ve engaged community members, caregivers, and service providers to better understand the realities of mental health service delivery at the primary care level under UHC.

These conversations have provided valuable insights into access, quality, and community systems, highlighting both gaps and opportunities for improvement.

As we conclude, the focus now shifts to turning these voices into citizen report cards that can drive accountability and more responsive mental health services.

Today marked the third day of our ongoing discussions in Makadara Sub-County, Nairobi, held at Makadara Level 4 Hospital.

Today’s session focused on service providers including healthcare workers, community health assistants (CHAs), and community health promoters (CHPs) whose experiences are key to understanding how mental health services are delivered at the primary care level.

Their insights are helping to highlight both system challenges and practical opportunities to strengthen service delivery and community mental health systems under UHC.

As we head into the final day, the focus remains on capturing voices that can drive meaningful change.

Youths are not just part of the conversation: they’re shaping the future 🙌
In Nyeri County, the MH Policy Brief Dissemination focused on breaking barriers, strengthening leadership, and defining the MH Agenda 2027–2031.

The issues are clear. The ideas are on the table.
Next step? Real action that improves access and affordability.

Day 2 of our citizen-led discussions in Makadara Sub-County(Lunga Lunga Health center and Makdara Level 4 Hopital), Nairobi, is digging even deeper into the realities of mental health care at the primary level.

Today’s conversations are surfacing critical gaps from limited access to essential services and commodities to the everyday challenges faced by communities navigating stigma and under-resourced systems.

But beyond the challenges, communities are also pointing to solutions. Their voices are shaping practical, people-centered recommendations that will feed into citizen report cards for stronger accountability under UHC.

This process is clear: real change starts with listening and acting on what we hear.
