On Tuesday, 25th August, Ruben Centre hosted finance teams from our sister Edmund Rice projects for a day of learning, reflection, and knowledge sharing.

The teams came from Edmund Rice Catholic Education Centre (ERCEC), Mirror of Hope CBO, Edmund Rice Centre Nairobi (ERCN), and Edmund Rice Eldoret Empowerment Programme (EREEP). The training focused on strengthening financial management practices and enhancing accountability across our projects.

Guests had the chance to interact with different departments and programmes at Ruben Centre, picking up insights into our work while sharing experiences from their own organisations.

In the board room, a session on post-audit review set the stage for deeper discussion, giving teams room to reflect on audit findings, talk through challenges, and identify ways to strengthen financial processes and controls.

The training was facilitated by Grace Wanjugu of Edmund Rice Foundation, who heads Finance and Administration. She guided the teams through key financial management practices and encouraged continuous learning and collaboration among the projects.

Sessions like this are what keep our organisations strong and accountable, and Ruben Centre was glad to host our colleagues from across the network. A big thank you to our management, led by Liz Mwangi, to Sammy Muga of ERF/ERCN, and to Grace for the careful planning behind a successful day.

We were delighted to welcome Will Phillips, an associate with the Phillips Family Foundation, to Ruben Centre.

During his visit, Will had the opportunity to engage with our various projects and interact with the young people we serve. As a former North Melbourne AFL midfielder and current Collingwood VFL player, he also spent time connecting with our sports program and sharing his passion and experience in sport.

We are grateful to Will for taking the time to learn more about the work we do and for engaging with our community. We look forward to strengthening partnerships that inspire, empower and create opportunities for young people through sport and holistic development.

From 30 July–7 August 2026, the National Special Needs Ball Games Competition brought together talented young athletes from across Kenya. The competition was held at Chania Boys High School and other venues in Thika, providing learners who are abled differently with an opportunity to showcase their abilities at the national level.

Representing A.E.F. Ruben Comprehensive School, Meshack Koech from the Kurt Fearnley Special Needs Unit delivered an outstanding performance, emerging National Champion in Bowling (Position One) and being named Best Player in the country!

Meshack’s achievement has brought another national trophy to Ruben Centre, adding to our recent successes at the Kenya National Music Festival. His victory is a powerful celebration of the talent, determination and potential of learners who are abled differently when given the right opportunities and support.

Meshack was accompanied by seven fellow athletes from A.E.F. Ruben Comprehensive School, who proudly represented the school at the national level. All seven participated with determination and earned certificates of achievement, marking an important milestone in their sporting journey.

For learners in our Special Needs Unit, sports are more than competition. They provide opportunities to build confidence, develop independence, strengthen teamwork, discover talents and experience inclusion and belonging.

Congratulations to Meshack and all our athletes! Your hard work, courage and determination have made the entire Ruben fraternity incredibly proud.

Two national trophies. Sixty young musicians. One trip to Bungoma County.

Last week, AEF Reuben Comprehensive School traveled to Kibabii University for the Kenya National Music Festival, taking on the best school ensembles in the country and coming home with four national placements.

Two trophies now sit at AEF Reuben Comprehensive School.

"Holding that first-place trophy for the woodwinds section felt completely surreal after months of squeezing evening rehearsals after classes. Back in the bus on our way back from Bungoma, everyone was exhausted, but as soon as we unpacked our instruments at the Centre, I knew every single early practice session was worth it, " Rosemary Ataka, Grade 9 (Clarinetist)

Sixty students, their trainer, and four staff made the trip Monday to Thursday. Behind the placements: rehearsals that started before school and ran after it, for months.

To our students; you carried this school's name onto a national stage and brought it back with trophies. To your trainer and the staff who traveled with you; thank you for the hours nobody sees. To Ghetto Classics, Ruben Centre Management, and everyone who backs these young musicians; this is what your support built.

It is always re-energizing to have Steve "Babu" Brunskill at the Ruben Centre!

Our department heads were treated to a powerful morning session focused on RespondAbility and the core keys of team cooperation. We kicked off with a candid refresher on "What do you feel like saying?", a roundtable moment that opened the floor for vulnerability, transparency, and genuine honesty.

Babu led the team through what he considers three vital keys to effective collaboration:

-Frequency of interaction
-Accountability
-Always aiming for a win-win outcome

To cement the learnings, the team navigated an interactive tile maze game designed by Babu; a fantastic, hands-on way to bring the concepts to life. We wrapped up with a collective commitment to always stay "Above the Line," focusing on the positive mindset and ownership that drive both personal and organizational growth.

What a heartwarming reunion! One of our biggest success stories, Collins Odhiambo, returned after his first academic year at Royal Irish Academy of Music to rekindle the Ruben Orchestra spark.

Accompanied by three of his Dublin classmates, Collins brought together former orchestra members—including his mentor and conductor, Brian Mwanika—for a special performance. On Sunday evening, Nairobi’s orchestral music lovers were treated to incredible harmonies and powerful crescendos at Sarit Centre.

This is what happens when you believe in someone's dream. Collins and hundreds of other talented young people from Mukuru continue to thrive because someone took a chance on them.

Our Grade 9 learners at AEF Reuben Comprehensive School proudly showcased their talent by performing the traditional folk song "Early One Morning" as part of their 2026 KNEC Creative Arts Project.

This performance reflects their creativity, teamwork, and confidence while celebrating the rich cultural heritage that music helps preserve.

We are proud of our learners and wish them every success in their Creative Arts assessment.

Following the Segal Family Foundation’s annual summit, "Segal 2026: The Next Beat," we were honored to welcome several incredible partners and friends to Ruben Centre.

• Ben Clark from the Phillips Foundation led an insightful session for our senior management team on their funding model and Theory of Change.
• We hosted our long-time partners at Partners For Equity, led by Mark Cubit, alongside Linda Fox and Lenah Gideon.
• We were also joined by Emily Umbers (Australian International Development Network), Luke Sypkes (SFO), as well as Jane Martin, Ros Grady, and Peter Bardsley.
