As we marks 20 years of advancing food systems transformation across Africa, Ethiopia's journey is a constant reminder that lasting impact is built through stronger systems, trusted partnerships, and a shared commitment to delivering results for farmers.

From strengthening institutions and markets to fostering collaboration across government, the private sector, and development partners, this story reflects an important lesson from the past two decades: transformation happens when we move beyond isolated interventions and invest in systems that endure.

This month's highlights easing cereal prices across West Africa, driven by improved production and stronger market supplies.

Across the region, cereal prices are easing as improved production and increased market supplies take effect. Maize prices have recorded some of the steepest declines, falling by as much as 56.2% year-on-year in Ghana and by 30–50% across Burkina Faso, Mali, and Niger. Millet and sorghum markets have followed a similar trend, with prices down by 20–40% or more in several markets.

Rice prices, meanwhile, have remained relatively stable. While short-term increases were observed in markets such as Bamako (+5.9%) and Nigeria (+3.9%), prices have generally stabilized or declined over the medium term, including a 27.2% year-on-year decline in Ghana and up to 36% across Malian markets.

Nigeria stands out, however, with localized pressures pushing up prices in the short term, including maize (+7.4%) and sorghum (+12.5%) month-on-month, highlighting the uneven nature of food market recovery across the region.

Africa's seed systems have come a long way, from limited access to improved seed to stronger markets, growing private sector participation, and increasing adoption by farmers.

Gathered in Kigali, Rwanda, for the High-Level Roundtable on Seed Systems Transformation, leaders from government, research institutions, seed companies, farmers' organizations, development partners, and financial institutions reflected on two decades of progress.

Dr. Solange Uwituze, Rwanda's Minister of Agriculture and Animal Resources, reminded participants that "Quality seed is the foundation of agricultural transformation. Without quality seed, it is impossible to achieve higher productivity, climate resilience, food security, commercialization, and competitiveness."

At the same time, Francis Mwatuni, Lead for Seed Systems Analysis and Knowledge Resources at AGRA's Centre of Excellence for Seed Systems in Africa ( ), noted that "Africa's challenge is no longer awareness, but scale and systems coherence, linking research, policy, and markets into one functioning ecosystem."

As AGRA marks 20 years, the next phase of seed systems transformation will depend on stronger institutions, evidence-based investments, and inclusive partnerships that ensure farmers can access the quality seed they need to thrive.

When Mushimiyimana Peline joined (Youth Entrepreneurship for the Future of Food and Agriculture) in 2024, she was farming primarily to feed her family. Today, she runs a greenhouse enterprise, recently ventured into chili production, and creates employment opportunities for other young people in her community.

A joint visit by AGRA and the Mastercard Foundation to her farm in Nyagatare District, Rwanda, offered a powerful reminder of what is possible when young people are equipped with the right mix of skills, market linkages, technical support, and access to opportunity.

Through , we are helping young people move beyond agriculture as a means of survival and embrace it as a pathway to dignified and fulfilling work.

Peline's story is just one of many.

Our team in Tanzania engaged with the Ministry responsible for Youth Development under the President's Office in the country to explore opportunities to strengthen youth entrepreneurship and employment in the country's agrifood systems.

At the centre of the discussions was (Youth Entrepreneurship for the Future of Food and Agriculture), AGRA's flagship initiative that is expanding economic opportunities for young people, particularly young women, through agribusiness.

The engagement reaffirmed a shared commitment between AGRA and the Government of Tanzania to create enabling systems that equip young people with the skills, financing, networks, and opportunities needed to thrive as entrepreneurs and leaders in resilient, inclusive, and commercially viable agrifood systems.

Because investing in youth is investing in the future of Africa's food systems.
