Pastoralist systems depend on mobility, access to grazing areas, and shared resource management.

Policies that strengthen community land governance and protect grazing systems are essential for sustaining livelihoods, reducing conflict, and supporting resilience in dryland regions.

As the International Year of Rangelands and Pastoralists 2026 continues to highlight biodiversity and ecosystem services, there is growing recognition that effective rangeland management must align with how pastoralist systems function in practice.

Rangelands are often discussed in the context of livestock and livelihoods; but they are also critical ecological systems.

Policies that strengthen community land governance, protect mobility, and support sustainable land management play an important role in maintaining biodiversity, ecosystem services, and resilience in drylands.

As the continues this month’s focus on biodiversity and ecosystem services, there is growing recognition that effective rangeland management depends on communities having a stronger role in how land and natural resources are governed.

Impact in community land governance is not only seen in policies and meetings; it is reflected in stronger local institutions and more inclusive decision-making.

The inclusion of women and youth in these governance structures is particularly important, as they remain among the primary users and managers of community land and natural resources.

Strong institutions at the community level remain central to sustainable land governance and resilient livelihoods in drylands.

From 11th–14th May 2026, the Drylands Learning and Capacity Building Initiative together with partners, FAO Kenya, Acted KE and the Ministry of lands supported the Community Land Management Committee (CLMC) elections in Nakurio, Lorengippi, and Lokiriama in Turkana County.

The elections mark an important milestone in strengthening community land governance under the Community Land Act by supporting communities to establish legally recognized governance structures for the management and protection of community land.

Community Land Management Committees play a critical role in:
β€’ Strengthening accountability and local participation in land governance
β€’ Supporting sustainable management of communal resources
β€’ Enhancing conflict prevention and resource-sharing mechanisms
β€’ Safeguarding community land rights for future generations

The inclusion of women and youth in the committees is both timely and important, as they remain among the primary day-to-day users and managers of community land and natural resources. Their participation strengthens inclusive decision-making and supports more representative and responsive governance systems.

Strong community land governance systems remain essential in supporting resilient livelihoods, sustainable development, and effective natural resource management in dryland regions.
