Yesterday, we broke ground for the construction of Education, and Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) infrastructure at Marigat Integrated Day and Boarding Primary School and Marigat Special School for the Visually Impaired in Baringo County. The project will include the construction of 13 classrooms, 29 toilets, a boys' dormitory, 30 handwashing stations, and the renovation and equipping of ICT and library facilities.

Dubbed Building Brighter Futures, the project is part of a wider partnership between Airtel Kenya and ChildFund Kenya that will benefit more than 2,000 learners across four public schools in Baringo, Wajir and Garissa counties.

The initiative focuses on improving access to quality education for children with visual and hearing impairments by creating more inclusive and supportive school environments, while addressing critical gaps in learning infrastructure, WASH facilities, and digital learning resources.

In partnership with LEAP Africa, Dow, and other stakeholders, we commemorated this year's in Kayole, Nairobi, bringing young people together to celebrate youth-led action and explore opportunities in environmental sustainability and the green economy.

The youth showcased how they are turning waste into opportunity through waste collection, recycling, and other circular economy solutions. Through their enterprises, the youth demonstrated how innovation and practical solutions can address pressing environmental and socioeconomic challenges while creating livelihoods and contributing to cleaner, more sustainable communities.

Speaking at the event, Mumbi Keega, Country Leader, Dow Eastern Africa and Public Affairs Africa, urged young people to embrace innovation, develop practical solutions to challenges in their communities, and seize opportunities emerging in the green economy.

, initiated by LEAP Africa and implemented in collaboration with various partners, aims to fuel a continent-wide movement of young changemakers, turning Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) aspirations into tangible community impact.

Today, we broke ground for the construction of a two-storey production workshop at Muguga Vocational Training Centre, a significant milestone under the โ€˜Ujenzi Fiti initiativeโ€™, supported by Dow. Once complete, the new workshop will provide an enhanced learning and production space, expanding opportunities for practical training and skills development for the youth.

'Ujenzi Fiti', which means Quality Construction in Kiswahili, promotes affordable and sustainable housing solutions while strengthening skills development and livelihood opportunities in Kenya.

So far, the project has strengthened vocational training capacity, enabling 50 learners annually to gain hands-on construction skills, with an estimated 70% transitioning into employment or self-employment. By equipping instructors, artisans, and trainees with practical knowledge on the production and construction using Interlocking Stabilised Soil Blocks ( Makiga Block ), the initiative is also improving access to safe and affordable housing through the demonstration of low-cost construction technologies for vulnerable households.

Youth-led climate-smart agriculture is taking root in Makueni, transforming lives, strengthening food security, and building resilience to climate change. Through the Re-greening for Resilience and Regeneration Project, implemented by ChildFund Kenya with support from Dow, youth groups are embracing kitchen gardening, fruit tree cultivation, and tree nursery management to create sustainable livelihoods while restoring the environment and growing a greener future for their communities.

In Makueni, Kiambu, and Kajiado counties, the project has trained more than 900 farmers in climate-smart agricultural practices and established about 60 community tree nurseries with the capacity to produce up to 1.2 million seedlings annually, helping scale climate action and environmental restoration at the community level.

Last week, we commissioned the Eiti Water Project, a milestone that will improve access to safe, reliable water for about 1,200 children and benefit surrounding community members.

The project involved the solarization of the Eiti community borehole, expansion of water storage capacity at Eiti Primary School, and construction of a handwashing station to promote better hygiene and health outcomes. With a reliable water supply now in place, families will spend less time searching for water, children can focus more on learning, and households will have improved access to water for domestic use.

By shifting to solar power, the project reduces dependence on unreliable grid electricity, lowers operational costs, and helps build a more sustainable and resilient water system for the community.
Implemented by Ewangan Child Development Programme with support from ChildFund Kenya and Britam Foundation, the project is part of our ongoing Solar-Powered Water Resilience Program for Community and School WASH Systems.

Orange-Fleshed Sweet Potato (OFSP), a vitamin A-rich and climate-resilient crop, is helping families in Turkana improve nutrition, strengthen food security, and increase household incomes. Through the production and consumption of OFSP, families are not only diversifying their diets but also building more resilient livelihoods in the face of climate and economic challenges.

Introduced about 4 years ago through a partnership involving ChildFund Kenya, Frontiers Children Development Organization. and other stakeholders, with support from the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) through ChildFund Deutschland, the initiative continues to create lasting impact for children and families across the region.
