Our Story
Global Youth For Peace is a Youth Peace Organization that was started in 2012 with the aim of promoting peace and develop young people who live in harsh conditions mainly from the informal settlements and conflict prone areas in an effort to the change the world for the better, the organization achieves this through partnerships with Institutions such as schools, churches, children homes, youth groups and other organizations with the same vision. Global Youth for Peace is a youth peace organization aimed at giving the youth living in informal settlements and conflict prone areas in Kenya and beyond an avenue for peaceful co-existence, economic empowerment and sustainable livelihoods. GYP is based in the ideology that the youth can change the world to become a better place through their positive contribution which when given the proper environment can impact the well-being of the community which in turn can change a country for the better. GYP recognizes the following areas as of major concern for the youth in Kenya and beyond who are from the Informal settlements and Conflict prone areas therefore strives to act upon them: Education & Peace Education GYP believes that the objective of providing appropriate education, which enables the youth to develop into good citizens of the country, likewise we also believes that the only way conflicts and any vice pertaining violence can only be prevented is through peace education among young people in the various institutions located in the informal settlements and conflict prone areas, we achieve this through organizing workshops in training teachers on how they can incorporate peace education in their syllabus, we also design peace curriculums in schools so as to assist the teachers in educating the youth about peace, we develop peace clubs and peace care groups in schools especially primary and secondary schools which better equips them in terms of knowledge and understanding about the importance of peace in our society today. Training and Employment Unemployment is a national catastrophe for young people waiting to explode any minute not only in Kenya but beyond, GYP acknowledges that the incidence of unemployment is more pronounced amongst the young people in informal settlements and conflict prone areas therefore it advocates for appropriate strategies to tackle the issue. The issue of unemployment has been stirred by advances in technology and communications, to tackle it self-employment needs to be created, GYP therefore advocates for a network of youth skill training centers to build up the capacities of the youth in income generating activities. Health and Family welfare GYP advocates for young people to be more involved in a structured manner in water and sanitation issues, cleaning of public places, research on health related matters; information, education and prevention campaigns in respect of health concerns, such as malaria, malnutrition, STIs, HIV/AIDS, teenage pregnancy and abuse of alcohol and other harmful substances, we therefore partner with organizations that are able to assist us in tackling the issues of health and family welfare. Protection of the Environment GYP attaches a lot of importance to environmental issues and therefore encourages young people in informal settlements and conflict prone areas to put greater emphasis on environmental education. We therefore motivate young people to establish adventure clubs with the view to creating awareness towards preservation of bio-diversity and to work with other stakeholders in planning and management of water bodies, common land and natural resources through active local participation; and also offer vocational training in recycling of waste materials for young people to find sources of livelihood and at the same time arrest the degradation of our environment. Recreation and Sports GYP believes that no system of education could be considered successful, unless it addresses the urges and aspirations of the youth with recreation hobbies such as soccer which is important to social life. We therefore advocate for recreation and sports and use it as a tool for unity and peaceful co-existence Culture & Art GYP promotes and advocates for activities related with Arts and Culture to provide recreation to youth residing in informal settlements and conflict prone areas. This is so because Arts and Culture are important to understand a holistic youth development and that young people need to be sensitized about its importance and general impact, inclusion of learning and appreciation of the country’s rich heritage in art, architecture, music and dance. Civics and good citizenship GYP promotes and motivate the youth to resist fragmentation of society on the basis of ethnicity, religion, language and promotion of democratic values enshrined in our constitution; to mobilize the youth to create local pressure groups within the community to fight corruption at all levels and to ensure that the benefits of development reach those to whom they are intended and not consumed by the powerful; laying emphasis on the economic and social security of young people to the underprivileged sections of our society and those who are mentally and physically challenged
