Only a matter of time

The Middle East faces its biggest crisis in years as it braces for a potential full-blown war between Iran and Israel that could drag in the entire region.

Israel's suspected killing of Ismail Haniyeh, the political leader of Palestinian Hamas, in Tehran on July 31 has pushed the region to the brink, and the recent killing of Hezbollar Secretary General Nasrallah in Beirut, and the subsequent Iranian military response against Israel, could spark an all-out war that would pit Iran and its regional proxies against Israel and the United States.

But at what cost we dare ask? What will happen to millions of civilians on harms way?

"In a thought-provoking publication, Zachary Kallenborn contends that the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons (TPNW) is a threat to humanity. To build this narrative, Kallenborn does not simply present nuclear deterrence as a stable and useful framework for avoiding conventional wars. Rather, he goes beyond the common deterrence arguments to assert that nuclear weapons restrain world wars, which allows nations to work together on addressing existential threats.
