On the 17th Of April 2026, we joined the global community in marking World Haemophilia Day 2026 under the theme “Diagnosis: The First Step to Care” at Port Reitz Subcounty Hospital.
The event brought together healthcare workers, patients, caregivers, and community members in a united effort to raise awareness on haemophilia and other inherited bleeding disorders. Activities kicked off with an awareness walk through the Port Reitz community, followed by engaging health talks and powerful lived-experience stories that underscored the importance of early diagnosis and continuous care.
The celebration was graced by Dr. Mohammed Hanif, Director of Medical Services, Mombasa County, who emphasized the need to strengthen health systems to ensure timely diagnosis and access to treatment for all. Dr. Saumu Wayua, Acting CEO of Coast General Teaching and Referral Hospital, highlighted the importance of integrating haemophilia care into broader healthcare services to improve patient outcomes.
Healthcare providers and patient advocates also shared critical perspectives. Betty Mbogo, Nurse in Charge at the CGTRH Haemophilia Clinic, stressed the importance of early diagnosis and proper management, especially among children. David Atati patient representative, spoke on living with haemophilia and the need for improved access to treatment and support systems. Suleiman Mwafisi, a parent representative, highlighted the challenges faced by caregivers and called for stronger community and institutional support.
Across all voices, one message stood out, haemophilia is manageable, but only if diagnosed early and treated consistently. There was also a strong call to ensure women and girls are included in screening and care, while addressing stigma through continuous community awareness.
This was more than a commemoration, it was a call to action. Together, we move closer to a future where every person living with haemophilia is diagnosed early and receives the care they deserve.
