Born Free Kenya

Born Free Kenya We are an animal charity that’s passionate about conservation, community and wildlife co-existence 🦁🐘🦒

Founded by Virginia McKenna OBE, Will Travers OBE and Bill Travers MBE in 1984, we work tirelessly to stop the exploitation and suffering of individual animals living in captivity or in the wild. From the start, we’ve campaigned for a future where animals and people can co-exist and where threatened and endangered species are protected for generations to come.

"Our VSLA groups in Amboseli continue to do well, with members utilising their savings for alternative livelihoods and to offset household budgets, especially on school fees and health. Alternative livelihoods are important for climate change resilience, while providing a platform for conservation messaging."- Phoebe Odhiang', Community Engagement Programme Manager, Born Free Foundation.

"I ask you to raise a glass, a cup, or a smile to Virginia, my mother, the fearless Born Free Matriarch – and to all mothers everywhere. Their nurturing spirit, constant guidance, and unfailing love make life worth living." – Will Travers OBE, Co-Founder & Executive President.

To all mothers, caregivers, and maternal figures around the world: thank you for the love you share every single day.

Through their beautiful drawings, the young conservationists at Enkii Primary School in Amboseli are raising powerful awareness about wildlife, their habitats, and the importance of peaceful coexistence.

Each pencil stroke tells a story of elephants roaming freely, wildlife grazing peacefully, and the delicate balance of nature we must all work to protect. Through our conservation clubs, we are nurturing a new generation of environmental champions, turning creativity into advocacy and inspiring young minds to become passionate stewards of nature for the future! 🐘🦒 🦁

Our Pride of Meru team in Kenya has been working since 2014 to protect and monitor the 50 - 70 wild lions living in Meru National Park.

We asked them to share their favourite lions. 🦁💛

You can support their vital work by donating to our Earth Raise match‑funding appeal.
Every pound you give before 29 April will be DOUBLED, meaning twice the impact for lions.

How do we inspire people to protect wildlife? 🦁🐘🦒

It starts with dialogue. Through community talks, hands-on activities, and open discussions, we're sharing knowledge.

When people understand how nature supports their daily lives, they're more likely to protect it.

Healthy environment = healthy livelihoods.
