The continued loss of women and girls to violence cannot become normal.

Together with fellow women's rights and gender justice organisations, we are calling for urgent action to address the escalating femicide crisis in Kenya. Every life lost is a tragedy. Every death demands accountability.

The Finance Bill 2026 has sparked conversations across the country, not only about taxes but also about privacy, accountability, and citizens' rights.

One of the key concerns raised by Kenyans is the proposal that could allow KRA to access more financial information to assess tax compliance. While the government maintains that the aim is to improve revenue collection and target tax evasion, many citizens are questioning where the line should be drawn between tax enforcement and the constitutional right to privacy.

The conversation also goes beyond tax collection. As citizens contribute through taxes every day, there is a growing demand for transparency on how public funds are being used. Are resources being allocated effectively? Are development projects delivering value for money? Are public institutions accountable to the people they serve?

For young people, this is an opportunity to understand how government decisions affect their lives and livelihoods. It is also a reminder that accountability does not begin and end with elections. It involves staying informed, participating in public forums, tracking public projects, engaging leaders, and asking questions about how public resources are managed.

Today, we proudly celebrate the spirit of freedom, unity, and resilience that defines our beautiful nation. Madaraka Day is more than a historic milestone, it is a reminder of the sacrifices made by those who fought for self-governance and the responsibility we carry to continue building a stronger, more inclusive Kenya for generations to come.

As we honor this special day, let us embrace the values of peace, hard work, courage, and togetherness. May the dreams of our youth remain alive, empowered, and unstoppable as they shape the future of our country with innovation, determination, and hope.

From the vibrant cities to the peaceful villages, from every tribe and every community, we stand united under one flag with one purpose, to move Kenya forward.

Happy Madaraka Day!
Tuungane kwa amani, tujenge taifa letu, na tuinue Kenya juu zaidi.

Men in Korogocho came together to experience and reflect on unpaid care and domestic work through budgeting, market shopping, and cooking activities.

The experience sparked important conversations around rising food prices, time spent in the market, transport challenges, and the heavy burden of unpaid care work often carried by women. Many participants shared how the activity changed their perspective, helping them better understand the daily realities women face at home.

The discussions also highlighted how unpaid care work contributes to time poverty and the need for cooperation, proper planning, and sharing responsibilities within households. Men reflected on practical ways to reduce this burden, including redistributing household roles, investing in time-saving tools like gas cookers and washing machines, and advocating for supportive services such as accessible daycare centers.

Most importantly, the engagement encouraged men to actively participate in unpaid care work, appreciate its value, and promote shared responsibility at home. Together, we continue to push for conversations and actions that strengthen gender equality, partnership, and balanced caregiving in our communities.

Empowering Young Entrepreneurs for Impact

The African Youth Panelists successfully completed Phase 1 of their Entrepreneurship Training, gaining practical skills and tools to help them build sustainable and impactful businesses.

The training focused on how to position themselves as entrepreneurs and agents of change, define the value they offer to clients, identify and reach customers, maintain strong client relationships, and understand the key resources and partnerships needed for business growth. Participants were also introduced to business model planning tools to support the development and scaling of their ventures.

A key message from the Mastercard Foundation was that entrepreneurship should go beyond generating income. As panelists start or strengthen their businesses, they were encouraged to consider:
Job Creation – How many opportunities can their business create for others? Influence – How can they inspire positive mindset change within their communities?
Youth Engagement – How can they involve and empower other young people through their work?

This training marks an important step in equipping young people with the knowledge, skills, and vision needed to create businesses that drive both economic growth and social impact. African Youth Panel (AYP). Mastercard Foundation

Join us today from 7–8pm in collaboration with the Kawangware Solidarity Network, as we explore the realities of care work and why it urgently needs greater recognition, support, and investment.

Care work sustains families, communities, and economies, yet much of it remains unpaid, unseen, and undervalued.

Earlier this week, we joined national stakeholders at the National Conference on Workplace Protection, a convening centered on one urgent truth: safe, dignified, and inclusive workplaces are a right, not a privilege.

The conference brought together government institutions, county governments, development partners, civil society, academia, labour unions, and the private sector, creating a critical space to address the growing realities of workplace violence and harassment within Kenya’s public sector.

Guided by evidence from the Kenya School of Government, ILO, IFC and the World Bank, discussions highlighted key systemic gaps, including weak reporting mechanisms, limited survivor protection, and ongoing psychosocial distress affecting workers across the public service.

A key highlight was the collective call to action for the urgent ratification of ILO Convention 190, alongside strengthened legal, institutional, and policy frameworks to ensure safety, dignity, equality, and mental wellbeing for all workers.

As Youth Alive! Kenya, we remain committed to championing safe workspaces where young people and all workers can thrive without fear, harassment, or violence.

Yesterday in Githurai, we convened alongside the Githurai Solidarity Network for a community engagement focused on unpacking the Finance Bill and its implications on care work and the care economy.

The session brought together diverse community voices to reflect on everyday caregiving realities, identify policy gaps, and put forward key proposals and recommendations that will feed into a memorandum for submission to the National Assembly tommorrow.

As conversations around economic justice continue, it is critical that care work is recognized, protected, and prioritized within national policy and budgeting processes.

Together, we continue to champion people-centered advocacy that places care at the heart of development.
