AFEW Kenya – Giraffe Centre will be joining birders globally for the Great Global Big Day tomorrow, May 9, 2026, and we invite you to participate.

View a glimpse of the birdlife found within the Giraffe Centre sanctuary, plus a poster detailing the event. This is a simple, meaningful way to support World Migratory Bird Day and contribute to citizen science by helping identify, count, record, and submit bird observations to eBird.

𝗬𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗷𝗼𝗯 𝗶𝘀 𝘀𝗶𝗺𝗽𝗹𝗲:
Join our team and watch and identify birds, count the number of each species spotted at once, record, and submit your data to eBird.

Time: 8:00am–2:00pm

No experience is needed, just your curiosity (and binoculars if you have them).

🌍 Thank You to All Participants of the 2026 AFEW Kenya Environmental Awareness Competition! 🌿
We are excited to share that we received over 5,000 amazing entries filled with inspiring ideas on the theme “Partnership in Conservation for a Healthy Planet and People.” Our students showcased their creativity and dedication through essays, artworks, and group projects, highlighting the importance of working together for a sustainable future.
Our team is currently reviewing all submissions carefully. We appreciate every student’s hard work and passion.

𝗔𝗙𝗘𝗪 𝗞𝗲𝗻𝘆𝗮 𝗶𝘀 𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘆 𝗱𝗲𝗹𝗶𝗯𝗲𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝗮𝗯𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝗮𝘁𝘁𝗲𝗻𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗦𝗧𝗔𝗦 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟲 – 𝗲𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁 (𝟴) 𝗱𝗮𝘆𝘀 𝗳𝗿𝗼𝗺 𝘁𝗼𝗱𝗮𝘆.
Judy Kepher-Gona points out, "STAS creates a space for guided learning, peer exchange, and practical mentoring, helping organisations translate insights into measurable action beyond the summit", describing everything that we continue to build at the Giraffe Centre.
Our efforts, for over four decades, have been grounded in a simple conviction: conservation with no education is incomplete. We inspire and educate the next generation of conservationists in Kenya; we prove that a wildlife sanctuary can run a true circular economy, and we are accountable to results, not merely the goodwill to do so.
Accountability presents a considerable challenge. The real task involves the translation of values into operational systems, pledges into practical applications and principles into demonstrable performance. STAS 2026 is designed to facilitate this critical process.
Given the impending SDG 2030 deadline, the tourism sector cannot afford performative sustainability. Stewardship organisations committed to leading by example, sharing effective strategies and acknowledging areas for improvement are required.
Our participation in STAS 2026 aims to facilitate learning, sharing experiences and enabling us to return with increased capabilities.

🦒 𝟰𝟬𝟬,𝟬𝟬𝟬 𝘃𝗶𝘀𝗶𝘁𝗼𝗿𝘀. 𝟭,𝟯𝟴𝟴 𝗡𝘂𝗯𝗶𝗮𝗻 𝗴𝗶𝗿𝗮𝗳𝗳𝗲𝘀 𝗹𝗲𝗳𝘁 𝗶𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘄𝗶𝗹𝗱, 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗺𝗼𝘀𝘁 𝗽𝗲𝗼𝗽𝗹𝗲 𝗱𝗶𝗱𝗻'𝘁 𝗸𝗻𝗼𝘄.
Each year, the Giraffe Centre (Nairobi) hosts nearly 400,000 guests for a magical wildlife encounter – a face-to-face interaction with the endangered Northern/Nubian giraffe.
Research conducted at the Giraffe Centre in 2025 reveals a conspicuous gap: 𝟱𝟬.𝟴% 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗼𝘀𝗲 𝗴𝘂𝗲𝘀𝘁𝘀 𝗮𝗿𝗿𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗲𝗻𝗱𝗮𝗻𝗴𝗲𝗿𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗸𝗻𝗼𝘄𝗹𝗲𝗱𝗴𝗲 of the 𝗡𝘂𝗯𝗶𝗮𝗻 𝗴𝗶𝗿𝗮𝗳𝗳𝗲 or that the 𝗚𝗶𝗿𝗮𝗳𝗳𝗲 𝗖𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗿𝗲 𝗿𝘂𝗻𝘀 𝗮 𝗯𝗿𝗲𝗲𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗴𝗿𝗮𝗺 𝘁𝗼 𝗿𝗲𝘄𝗶𝗹𝗱 and increase their population.
That's an opportunity.
When this knowledge gap is closed through intentional visitor experiences, tourists remarkably become conservation ambassadors. Curiosity is transformed into commitment while photo moments become a conservation milestone.
This is what 𝗶𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗽𝗿𝗲𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗲𝗱𝘂𝗰𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗶𝗻 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝘀𝗲𝗿𝘃𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 done right looks like: moving from just a lecture to wonder, awareness, and then action.
The data is clear, the approach scalable, and for one of Africa’s most graceful species, the stakes couldn't be higher.

Since our last Rothschild (Nubian) Giraffe translocation in 2012, the Giraffe Centre has helped rewild parks across Kenya with over 20 calves 🦒🌱
A major milestone in the Nubian Giraffe conservation journey.

Today, in partnership with and the we proudly welcome three Nubian Giraffes to our breeding tower at the Giraffe Centre.

It’s an honour to work alongside like-minded partners committed to protecting Kenya’s wildlife—together, we’re giving the Nubian Giraffe a future.

We want to hear about the amazing collaborations that are making a difference around you—whether it’s school programs, community initiatives, or national partnerships featured in the news.
Encourage your students and children to explore how these partnerships contribute to a healthier planet and people. Let them share their thoughts through essays and artworks by April 5, 2026.
