Eight weeks of learning, reflection, and growth came to a close as we graduated from the Care & Commerce Training: Financial & Business Skills for Sustainable ECD Providers.

This programme brought together members of the House Managers Agencies Association - Kenya (HMAA) to strengthen our capacity in financial management, business planning, governance, and sustainable growth for childcare and placement enterprises. As the care economy continues to expand, building the business and financial resilience of those providing these essential services is not optional—it is necessary.

What stood out most over the past weeks was the honest exchange of experiences among providers who are working daily to professionalize childcare services, support families, and create dignified employment within the care sector.

Our sincere appreciation to The African Early Childhood Network (AfECN) and NinaGina Consulting for partnering with HMAA to deliver such a practical and empowering programme. Your commitment to strengthening the childcare ecosystem is both timely and impactful.

Congratulations to all the participants who committed their time every Thursday to learn, question, and grow. The real work now begins—applying these lessons to build stronger, more sustainable childcare businesses.

Strengthening Partnerships for Skills and Dignity in Care Work
The House Managers Agencies Association - Kenya (HMAA) today held a productive meeting with the Nairobi City County Government leadership from the Education and Vocational Training Directorate to explore areas of mutual collaboration.
Our discussions focused on building stronger pathways for training, certification, and professional development for house managers and domestic workers, as well as supporting skills development, placement opportunities, and standards within the care and domestic work sector.
We also explored opportunities for partnership in vocational training programs, recognition of prior learning, and promoting dignified, professional domestic work as a viable career path.
HMAA remains committed to working with public institutions to professionalize the sector, protect workers, and improve the quality of services in Kenyan homes.

Empowering Africa’s ECD Placement Agencies Through Financial Clarity and Sustainability

AfECN recently concluded Module 1 of the Care and Commerce Model training for ECD Placement Agency Owners, delivered in partnership with NinaGina Consulting.
The training focused on strengthening agency owners as the backbone of Africa’s Early Childhood Development ecosystem by equipping them with practical financial and business management skills.
Key areas covered included:
• Shifting from passion-led operations to sustainable, growth-focused businesses
• Personal and business financial literacy, including the 50/30/20 rule
• Cash flow management, profit & loss statements, and balance sheets
• Addressing the “Busy But Broke” and Single Pot challenges through financial separation

Beyond business growth, the training directly supports caregivers by promoting timely payments, stable placements, improved service quality, and reinvestment into the workforce.
As we emphasize: “Take care of your business, and it will take care of you and the caregivers you serve.”

We look forward to building on this foundation in upcoming modules focused on quality and growth planning.

The House Managers Agencies Association was privileged to attend the High-Level Childcare Stakeholders Breakfast Meeting convened by the ECDNeK Secretariat on 8th July 2025 at Fairview Hotel, Nairobi. This engagement followed Kenya’s participation in the AU Childcare Conference in Addis Ababa and was guided by a concept note aimed at strengthening coordination and fostering strategic collaboration in the childcare and early childhood development space.

We took the opportunity to advocate for the swift finalization of the childcare curriculum by NITA to ensure standardized, quality care services across the country. We are proud to have been incorporated into the working group that will engage with the Principal Secretary, State Department for Children Services, to implement key action areas outlined during the meeting.

Together, we are shaping a stronger care economy for Kenya.

On Thursday, HMAA joined key policymakers, funders, service providers, and sector stakeholders for critical discussions on the future of childcare in Kenya.

From mapping stakeholders to analyzing legal frameworks, the conversations were robust—and our sector’s voice was firmly on the table. As house managers and agencies, we play an essential role in ensuring families access quality, affordable childcare.

It’s an uphill climb, but we’re committed to driving policies and partnerships that recognize and support our industry’s vital contribution.

👏🏽 Kudos to Alice and Shiko, who represented HMAA in the discussions and helped spotlight the needs and potential of our sector.

Celebrating the Heart of Our Homes

Today, we honor the incredible nannies, house managers, and domestic workers who care, nurture, and build homes alongside us — even if just for a day.

💛 From teaching first steps to creating lasting routines, their work goes beyond tasks — it's love, patience, and dedication in action.

To every woman who has left her home to care for ours — we see you, we appreciate you, and we celebrate you.

🔹 The role of agencies in formalizing & professionalizing the care ecosystem

As HMAA, we continue to advocate for the rights, welfare, and recognition of domestic and childcare workers—because care work is essential work. 💼🧡
