Starting August 1st through October 31st, our Mara Predator Conservation research team will spend three months in the field tracking, photographing, and mapping the large carnivores of the Greater Mara Ecosystem.

Marking our 13th consecutive year, every photo captured and coordinate logged feeds directly into our long-term ID catalogues, ensuring that predator conservation in the Mara remains grounded in science.

Follow along as we bring you live updates from the Maasai Mara during our Intensive Monitoring Session (IMS) over the next 3 months.

No single organisation can protect the Greater Maasai Mara Ecosystem alone. It takes dedicated community leaders, field scientists, health workers, teachers, and county departments working in harmony.

Recently, our teams gathered at Basecamp Enjoolata for the Mara Implementing Partners Workshop to strengthen our collective impact convened by The Maa Trust .

Over 50 change-makers representing more than 20 organisations sat down to share resources, align programs, and coordinate how we support the communities sharing their rangelands with Mara’s wildlife. During the sessions, our Mara Predator Conservation team had the opportunity to share our unified framework for sustainable coexistence within our interdependent pillars (People, Predators and Partnerships).

To make sure these discussions turn into action, a new joint Steering Committee was formed along with county administration, the Ministry of Education, the Ministry of Health, World Vision, and the Basecamp Foundation. Together, we are designing a new Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) to share data faster, co-fund community waste-management initiatives, and ensure that every community outreach project reaches those who need it most.

Sustainable conservation is about people, and when we work together, we safeguard both human livelihoods and the wildlife that makes the Mara unique.

2025 was a year that tested our resilience, inspired our teams, and proved that the future of African conservation must be community-led. Our teams achieved significant impact by putting science into daily practice and prioritizing the wellbeing of the communities who share their rangelands with apex predators.

🐾 Science-Driven Research: Logged over 9,206 km of monitoring patrols, keeping watch over 316 lions and 63 cheetahs.

📡 4,042 Interceptions: Our Lion Ambassadors responded to 4,042 real-time geofence alerts to guide herders to safety and prevent predator-livestock conflict before it could start.

💉 201,187 Vaccinations: We protected 146,816 cattle and 54,371 sheep from devastating livestock diseases, securing local family livelihoods.

🐕 One Health in Action: We vaccinated 2,310 domestic cats and dogs against Rabies, protecting local families and preventing disease outbreaks from reaching endangered wild dogs.

🎓 Future Leaders: Sponsored 23 passionate local youth on full academic scholarships to WRTI Naivasha.

“Our classes teach us how to manage wildlife, but this camp has taught us how to lead our people.” - CLP Beneficiary

We are proud to have hosted our intensive, 2-day Conservation Leadership Programme (CLP) Mentorship & Leadership Camp for our largest cohort yet: 43 young leaders. This year’s camp represents a model of community and continuity. We welcomed 40 new scholarship beneficiaries starting their academic journeys, including 3 continuing CLP scholars who stepped up as peer leaders.

Facilitated by the team from CHD Conservation Kenya (Jane, Christopher, Veronicah, and Lillian), this training, ‘Beyond the Wild,’ provided the bridge between classroom science and the real-world skills needed to thrive.

Having Christopher and Veronicah facilitate these sessions brought a huge difference to the room. Both are CLP alumni who sat in these classrooms years ago. They gave our 43 students proof of where this scholarship can lead by standing before the new cohort as established conservation professionals.

Our scholars come from indigenous, pastoralist communities neighboring Kenya’s key wildlife landscapes. They carry a unique, personal connection to the land. Through this camp, they gained the professional tools to match their passion.

We are proud to share the Q1 2026 Progress Report for KWT's flagship initiative, our Mara Predator Conservation Programme (MPCP).

MPCP's spatial data this quarter revealed territory shifts, with the Isanchu Pride moving westward and displacing the Fig Tree Pride along the Olerai corridor - a movement that guided our community intervention patrols.

Through Mara Predator we are creating practical pathways toward sustainable human-predator coexistence by combining cutting-edge technology like EarthRanger with herder training and school programmes.
