The East African Centre for Human Rights - EACHRights

The East African Centre for Human Rights - EACHRights The East African Centre for Human Rights (EACHRights) is a Non-Governmental Organization

The organization was established to undertake Human Rights work within a regional context. Its creation followed consultation with academics and Human Rights practitioners from United Kingdom, Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania and Ethiopia. These consultations revealed a lacuna with regard to human rights in Kenya and within the region. This necessitated a desk review that resulted in the development of a c

oncept paper which was finalized in December 2010. The desk review revealed some of the gaps that need to be filled and opportunities that need to be exploited namely the promulgation of the new Constitution of the Republic of Kenya, the developments at the African Court of Human and People’s Rights, the developments at the East African Court of Justice, the developments at the African Committee on the Rights and Welfare of the Child, the adoption of the Optional Protocol on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights, the ongoing judicial reforms in Kenya, the Vision 2030 and the Millennium Development Goals to mention a few. The organization is the first regional Human Rights institution of its kind in East Africa that seeks to initiate and undertake programmes that will promote, protect and enhance Human Rights generally but with special emphasis on the promotion of the realization of economic, social and cultural rights in Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania. The establishment of the organization was thus driven by the developments in the international, regional and national human rights arena and discourse; the gaps that were identified with regard to Human Rights in East Africa and the emerging opportunities that have presented themselves with regard to the promotion, protection and enhancement of human rights in general and specifically to the realization of economic, social and cultural rights, the forgotten child of the human rights family. While developing the initiative, bearing in mind the need to compliment the work of other organizations and also to learn some best practices, due regard was had to the programmes of other national Human Rights organizations in Kenya.

We are proud to have our Health Justice Team representing EACHRights at the 9th RHNK Pan-African and Youth SRHR Scientific Conference 2026, joining policymakers, researchers, practitioners, advocates, and young people from across the continent in shaping the future of sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR).

On Day 2 of the conference, discussions focused on “Innovations to Address and Eliminate the Triple Threat of Sexual and Gender-Based Violence (SGBV), HIV Infection, and Adolescent Pregnancies.” The sessions highlighted innovative, evidence-based, and youth-centred approaches that are critical to ensuring adolescents and young people can access information, services, and supportive environments that enable them to thrive.

The conversations underscored the importance of meaningful youth participation, strengthened partnerships, knowledge sharing, and collective action in addressing the persistent challenges affecting young people across Africa. They also reinforced the need for sustained investment in policies, programs, and systems that protect and promote the health, rights, and well-being of adolescents and youth.

As EACHRights, we remain committed to championing health justice and advancing the realization of sexual and reproductive health and rights for all young people, ensuring that no one is left behind.

Access to quality, inclusive, and climate-responsive education remains a critical priority, especially for refugees and marginalized host communities who continue to face systemic barriers in realizing their right to education. Strengthening policy implementation, promoting inclusivity, and addressing the growing impact of climate change on education are essential steps towards ensuring no learner is left behind.

In partnership with The Lutheran World Federation, we held a one-day conference bringing together government representatives, civil society actors, education stakeholders, and community representatives to discuss evidence-based approaches towards advancing the right to education for refugees and host communities.

The conference provided a platform to disseminate advocacy briefs, validate the Eco-Smart Guidelines for Basic Education Institutions, and facilitate policy dialogue on inclusive and sustainable education systems. Discussions highlighted the need to address gaps in teacher deployment, recognition of refugee teachers, and climate change mainstreaming within the education sector.

Through this engagement, stakeholders reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening accountability, promoting inclusive policy reforms, and ensuring that evidence informs national education and local integration processes.

This week, we joined media practitioners at the CEHURDMediaFellowship2026 in Uganda to equip journalists with tools to track Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights (SRHR) commitments through the United Nations Universal Periodic Review (UPR) mechanism.

Our Program Team set a powerful baseline:
❝Human rights are universal legal guarantees designed to protect fundamental freedoms, equality, and human dignity. International law obligates governments to promote, respect, and protect these rights, guaranteed both globally by the UDHR and locally under the Constitution of Uganda.❞

Key UPR Process Takeaways for the Media:
1️⃣ The Power of the UPR Cycle: The UPR is an active, ongoing accountability pipeline, not a one-off event in Geneva. With Uganda’s next review cycle approaching, the media has a strategic window right now to bring state commitments to light.
2️⃣ Translating Dense UN Texts: Government ministries rarely have the time to navigate complex 100-page UN outcome reports. Journalists hold the power to act as translators—breaking down dense diplomatic promises into clear public interest stories that the general public and duty bearers can understand.
3️⃣ Tracking the Money at Home: A signature on a treaty in Geneva means nothing if it isn't backed by domestic action. The media's critical role is to monitor the national budget and investigate whether the state is allocating actual funds to implement its accepted human rights and health recommendations.

By using their platforms to raise awareness and track state promises, journalists ensure that international human rights commitments move beyond documentation and translate into real community-level change!

From 27th to 29th April 2026, in partnership with CEHURD, we convened a workshop in Uganda bringing together SRHR social movement actors to develop a comprehensive report for the 4th Cycle Universal Periodic Review (UPR) process.

This engagement strengthened the capacity of CSOs on the UPR mechanism and deepened understanding of Uganda’s 3rd Cycle UPR SRHR recommendations. It also supported participants to critically review progress, identify gaps, and collaboratively develop a strong and evidence-based 4th Cycle SRHR UPR submission.

The process significantly enhanced evidence-based advocacy and strengthened social movements’ ability to engage duty bearers, amplify community voices, and promote accountability on Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights (SRHR) commitments in Uganda.

From 20th–24th April 2026, in partnership with the State Department for Justice, Human Rights and Constitutional Affairs (SDOJ), the Kenya National Commission on Human Rights (KNCHR), the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR), Lutheran World Federation (LWF), Kenya Legal and Ethical Issues Network on HIV and AIDS (KELIN), Centre for the Study of Adolescence (CSA), MSI Reproductive Choices, GEM Trust, and the Independent Medico-Legal Unit (IMLU), we convened a five-day National Stakeholders’ Workshop on Kenya’s 4th Cycle Universal Periodic Review (UPR).
The workshop brought together Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs), constitutional commissions, independent offices, civil society organizations, and development partners to review the National Human Rights Policy and Action Plan and validate the UPR Implementation Matrix.
Through technical sessions, breakout discussions, and plenary engagements, participants aligned priority recommendations, strengthened policy actions, and agreed on clear implementation pathways.
Key recommendations included strengthening inter-agency coordination, ensuring adequate financing, improving monitoring and data systems, and sustaining meaningful collaboration with civil society and development partners.
The workshop successfully secured commitment from key duty bearers and reinforced a shared responsibility toward advancing human rights in Kenya.
