A WELCOME STEP TOWARDS NAMIBIA’S ENERGY INDEPENDENCE! 🇳🇦
On 1 July 2025, I wrote an opinion piece published in The Namibian, asking: “Why Is Namibia Importing Electricity While Exporting Uranium?”
I am glad to see Namibia taking concrete steps towards exploring nuclear power, making use of its own natural resource and with the appointment of John Titus as Nuclear Commissioner.
I congratulate Prime Minister Dr Elijah Ngurare for taking this bold and forward-looking step towards exploring Namibia’s nuclear energy potential.
This could be a turning point for energy security, local mineral beneficiation, industrialisation and unlocking greater economic value from our uranium resources.
Namibia must move beyond exporting raw minerals to creating lasting wealth and prosperity for its people!

BREAKING NEWS !!
NAMIBIA TAKES FIRST BIG STEP TOWARD NUCLEAR POWER | Prime Minister Dr Tjitunga Elijah Ngurare has appointed John Titus as Namibia’s Nuclear Commissioner as Namibia boldly steps up preparations to assess the possible introduction of nuclear power into the country’s future energy mix.
Titus, who is a Director in the Department of Energy in the Ministry of Industries, Mines and Energy, will coordinate the technical programme of the Nuclear Energy Programme Implementing Organisation (NEPIO) and head its Secretariat. His appointment establishes a central focal point for coordinating the country’s nuclear energy preparatory work.
“The decision to support a long-term nuclear power programme is a decision to invest in the institutional, technical and human capacity required to prepare Namibia for its future energy
needs,” said the Prime Minister.
Ngurare has also constituted the NEPIO Management Committee (NMC)- a structure is intended to provide high-level policy coordination and strategic oversight.
This was announced yesterday afternoon in a media release issued by Rhingo Mutambo, Chief Public Relations Officer in the Office of the Prime Minister.
The NMC is made out of Executive Directors from the Office of the Prime Minister (OPM), the Ministry of Industries, Mines and Energy, the Ministry of International Relations and Trade, the Ministry of Health and Social Services, as well as the National Planning Commission.
Guided by the International Atomic Energy Agency ((AEAE), the Namibian NEPIO NMC will assess issues ranging from nuclear safety and security to financing, radioactive waste management, environmental protection, human-resource capacity, nuclear power and public engagement.
Namibia’s substantial uranium resources have strengthened the case for exploring nuclear energy as part of efforts to secure the country’s long-term energy needs, promote local mineral beneficiation and value addition, and unlock greater economic value from its natural resources.
