What happens to inmates after their release from prison?

The society is often worried and mostly not prepared to receive ex-offenders after serving their sentences. At Faraja Foundation, this becomes the main business, to ensure that we are building a peaceful, safe and just society by reintegrating offenders through a human rights-based approach. Many of the ex-offenders, based on the nature of their cases that took them to prison, require various interventions to ensure the rate of re-offending is minimized. Today, meet one of our clients who has undergone various psycho-social based interventions including basic business startup skills training while in prison and has interests in starting a small scale groceries store. This program has been done in partnership with the Kenya Community Development Foundation as a way of giving second chances to those willing to transform their lives. The best we can do as a society is to constantly support them in their resettlement process.

Faraja Foundation through its Chief Executive Officer, Jane Wanjiru Kuria, OGW participated in this incredible week of insights, discussions, and networking in beautiful Singapore! The Singapore Prison Service played an outstanding role in hospitality and organization.

with Smiles for Children in Kakamega

As schools resumed, there were a select group of children whose joy was beyond measure. These are the children whose mothers are serving their prison sentences at Kakamega Women Prison. Faraja Foundation and Kenya Community Development Foundation in collaboration with the Kenya Prisons Service (KPS) organized a Remote Parenting Session on 24th August 2024. This session provided the families of the inmates ample with time to reunite with their loved ones behind bars. It further allowed the inmates to follow up the progress of their school going children. They were treated to a wonderful luncheon which they enjoyed together with their families. This activity is a significant process in aiding the inmates towards the eventual reintegration of offenders back to society once they complete serving their terms. It was wonderful to see the faces shine with happiness as the event was graced by the Officer In Charge, Kakamega Women Prison, SSP Doreen Phoebe Anabaka and Faraja Foundation's Chief Executive Officer, Jane Wanjiru Kuria, OGW.

Guess who’s speaking at the ICPA Annual Conference 2024 in Singapore? That's right, I am! I couldn’t be more thrilled to join over 200 incredible speakers and more than 150 presentations over 6 action-packed days.
Hosted by the International Corrections and Prisons Association (ICPA) and Singapore Prison Service at the stunning Grand Copthorne Waterfront Hotel, this event is set to be the highlight of the year for anyone passionate about corrections and the justice system. Faraja Foundation in collaboration with the Kenya Community Development Foundation started its two-day work engagement at G.K Prison Kitale Women with a one day Caregivers Sensitization Forum. This training has come after the successful development and validation of a Caregivers Training Guide for Children of Incarcerated Mothers in Women Prisons in Kenya. The focus of this training guide is the care for children in emotionally challenging environments such as correctional institutions. The participants of the sensitization forum were drawn from the Chaplaincy, Welfare Offices, the Prisons ECDE Section, Inmate caregivers and officers who supervise the operations in the daycare centre in the prison.
