Its work is based on the principle of deepening the participation of the slum dwellers in the formulation and implementation of policies in human settlements through:
* Advocacy and lobbying for policy development and reforms
* Capacity strengthening of the slum dwellers for participation and the Secretariat for programme implementation
* Building partnerships with local authorities,
private sector organizations, professional organizations and research institutions.
* Building solidarity with other like minded civil society organizations
* Supporting livelihood improvements for slum dwellers
* Influencing delivery of basic services to slum dwellers.
* Strengthening information sharing between slum dwellers, government and other stakeholders.
* Expansion of knowledge to address challenges in human settlements.
