" You pay a heavy price for being a good leader - Uduak Amimo"

The very well spoken and seasoned Journalist Uduak Amimo facilitated day 3 ALG keynote session on trust

Being a stand out leader / a statesman will garner you enemies that will ultimately bay for your blood.

She reflected that, Trust is build through agreement and harmony within and outside you rather than your charisma, then transformation will follow depending on the speed of gaining trust, being truthful and accountable

Actively and intentionally find out what real trust looks like, involve everyone in the room and make it safe for change and consequently transformation.

And to be trusted, understand your value, show up as who you are, what your values are despite attention and scrutiny.

What does it take to restore trust in our institutions, and what role do young people play in that process?

At the 2026 AYLF Annual Leadership Gathering, we had the privilege of hearing from Cabinet Secretary Mercy Wanjau, who delivered a keynote that left every delegate thinking differently about leadership, responsibility, and the power of trust.

She was candid: low trust in government is not a local problem, it is a global crisis, fuelled by broken promises, misinformation, economic anxiety, and leadership that too often operates in isolation from the people it serves.

But she also gave us a path forward. For young people, it means preparing to lead seriously through strategic communication, informed engagement, and the courage to build and maintain trust even when it is costly. "The higher you go," she reminded us, "the lonelier it gets." The antidote? Leading with trust, and within trust, at every level.

Trust is the foundation of impactful leadership, yet it remains one of the most fragile and rare values in society.

At AYLF ALG, Tim Kreutter facilitated the theme exposition: “Restoring and Anchoring Institutions in Trust: Youth as Agents of Transformation.” A powerful reminder that rebuilding trust requires authenticity, accountability, transparency, and long-term commitment.

Today’s youth are capable of driving meaningful change. But transformation begins with becoming trustworthy individuals who align their values with their actions.

Restoring trust in institutions will take time, consistency, and collective effort, from government, civil society, the private sector, and young people themselves.

Because true transformation is not built overnight; it is built through trust.

We believe in the power of young people in transforming the leadership of this continent, and as key influencers of leadership decision making processes, Students Council Chairpersons are at the core of this process!

As part of our Annual Leadership Gathering 2026, we are engaging 20 Chairpersons from 20 universities in a full day day workshop on statesmanship, ahead of the National Prayer Breakfast.

They have been challenged to correct the past, build the present, and shape the future!

Leadership is not just about holding positions; it is about restoring hope, rebuilding trust, and becoming a force for transformation.

This year’s Annual Leadership Gathering promises to be more enlightening, engaging, and impactful as we open the table for a timely and necessary conversation on TRUST.

We are giving YOU, the student leader, an opportunity to be part of this transformative journey under the theme:

“Restoring and Anchoring Institutions in Trust; Youth as Agents of Transformation.”

Join young leaders, visionaries, and changemakers as we shape conversations that will redefine leadership for generations to come.

This week at the SLDP Master Class, we were honored to host Linet Mukunji as she guided our fellows through an engaging session on Personal Branding and Professional Etiquette.

From understanding the power of first impressions to learning how to intentionally build a credible and authentic personal brand, the session challenged our fellows to think beyond qualifications and embrace leadership that is visible, impactful, and professional.

Every lesson, every conversation, and every experience continues to shape their personal leadership journey.

At SLDP, we remain committed to raising a generation of purpose-driven young leaders equipped to influence their communities, workplaces, and nations positively.
