Henry Wanyoike is a Triple World Record holder. He broke the World Guinness book of records as the fastest paralympic marathoner.
In many parts of Kenya and world today, the name Henry Wanyoike is a household name. He has caught the world in storm for his achievements in the athletic world. Born in Kanjeru slums, Kikuyu district in a rural set up. He grew up well until he completed his secondary school.
In May 1995, he woke up in total darkness and after arguing with his mother that it wasn't yet daytime, it dwelled on him that he had gone blind. The blindness was caused by mild stroke. He is over 99% blind.
After a series of counseling and therapy and overcoming suicidal depression. He joined Machakos Technical Institute for the blind on rehabilitation program. It was here that the athlete bug bit him and took part in Olympic day run and this enabled him participate in the national trials for Sydney 2000 paralympics in Australia where he won a Gold medal on 5000 metres. Since then he has won both local and international track competitions and marathons for the disabled and abled. His residence is awash with medal accolades.
In Kenya he has been awarded of order grand warrior medals by the 2nd and 3rd presidents of kenya and as UN runners up 2005 personality of the year among other ambassadorial posts.
