Our zeal to ensure Mau Mau Veterans and their families acquire land and settle in Rumuruti in Laikipia remains an all-time priority.
We have had a good number of our members get parcels of land upon which our environment conservation team has helped to grow trees to make the areas of allocation more conducive. It has been very inspirational seeing some dedicated members planting and harvesting plenty of diverse crops in the land allocated.
Despite the climate being hot, committed members have proved that the dry areas can be transformed to food baskets. In both of the Dedan Kimathi Villages at Thome, crops such as beans, maize, kales, cabbages among others have been yielding heavily.
In the same villages, fruits such as oranges, lemons, avocados, mangoes and pawpaws have been growing well earning beneficiaries good money. This is without forgetting the miraa crop which has taken over the area market by satisfying constant demand.
It is our desire to amplify the impact and accelerate the area transformation through agriculture and sustainable tree growing that Ms. Evelyn Wanjugu Kimathi appeals to the members and land beneficiaries allocated land to begin developing their pieces. She urges them to start fencing, farming, growing trees and building homes. She further advises those allocated but are not ready for the above to lease their land to productive users.
She has touched on the issues of many members complaining about destroyed or removed beacons while they take a very long time to add any value to the land allocated leaving it open to the normal pastoralism that takes place in the open fields. She recommends fencing, ploughing, tree planting, crop production and construction of houses and semi permanent structures to contain trespassing as the host communities have been in the plains for the longest time hence grazing on any open fields is their norm.
In her sentiments, she encourages the beneficiaries to view their lands as productive assets capable of generating income through crop cultivation, livestock rearing, residential development among other economic activities dependent on land as a basic factor of production.
