Through the SIDA and SDC-funded project, DRC East Africa & Great Lakes is supporting communities in Darfur to rebuild key roads that help people move, work, and access services.

Community-led road rehabilitation has improved mobility, trade, and access to services, allowing residents to earn income through cash-for-work while restoring vital routes between villages and markets.

In Nertiti, communities are also leading the construction of a bridge that links families to markets and a food distribution centre. Once completed, it will ensure safe access even during the rainy season.

Under the SIDA/SDC-funded project, DRC East Africa & Great Lakes in Sudan is improving sanitation and hygiene conditions in displacement sites in Nertiti and Golo through the construction of latrines and the training of community hygiene promoters.

The new latrines are providing families with safer and more dignified sanitation facilities, reducing health risks and improving overall living conditions. At the same time, trained community hygiene promoters are helping raise awareness on good hygiene practices, ensuring these efforts have lasting impact.

These activities are strengthening community ownership and supporting healthier, more resilient environments in displacement sites.

Through funding from ECHO, DRC East Africa & Great Lakes in Sudan is supporting displaced families in Central Darfur to rebuild their lives. In Golo and Nertiti, families who fled conflict have received cash assistance, hygiene kits, psychosocial support, and awareness sessions to help them recover and start anew.

Shadia, displaced from Al-Fashir and now living in Golo, shared:
“The people of Golo treated us very well, and supported us with cash and dignity kits. This help was very important for us.”

Across the Horn of Africa, droughts, floods, and conflict don’t stop at the border — and neither should our responses.

At today’s workshop, the Borderlands Working Group explored how stronger data, smarter forecasts, and cross-border approaches can help protect communities before crises hit.

Today DRC East Africa & Great Lakes & Welthungerhilfe brought donors and partners together to tackle one key question: How can we act earlier in the borderlands?

With conflicts and climate shocks crossing borders faster than responses, anticipatory action isn’t a niche idea — it’s a necessity. Time to move from reacting to preventing displacement.
