KARIOBANGI NORTH EL NIÑO PREPAREDNESS COMMUNITY CLEAN-UP EXERCISE

As part of ongoing efforts to strengthen community preparedness ahead of the anticipated El Niño rains, Kariobangi Social Justice Centre (Kariobangi SJC) today joined various stakeholders and community members for another round of the Kariobangi North El Niño Preparedness Community Clean-Up Exercise.

The exercise aimed to promote responsible waste management, reduce the risk of flooding, improve environmental and public health, and contribute to a cleaner, safer, and more resilient Kariobangi North.

The clean-up brought together Unlimited Youth Kenya , Green Army, Climate Worx, various youth groups, Community Health Promoters, the Kenya Red Cross, Nairobi City County officials, local government administration officers, and other community members. Their participation demonstrated the importance of collective action and collaboration in addressing environmental challenges and strengthening disaster preparedness at the community level.

During the exercise, participants worked together to clean public spaces and remove accumulated waste and debris from areas that could potentially block drainage systems and worsen flooding during heavy rains.

The exercise also provided an opportunity to engage and sensitise community members on the importance of proper waste disposal, maintaining clean surroundings, keeping drainage systems clear, and remaining vigilant throughout the rainy season.

Flood preparedness is not only about responding when disaster strikes; it begins with the simple actions we take every day. Keeping our neighbourhoods clean, managing our waste responsibly, protecting our drainage systems, and working together are essential steps towards safeguarding our homes, families, and community.

The commitment demonstrated by the participating organisations, government officials, youth, community health promoters, and residents is a powerful reminder of what can be achieved when a community comes together around a common purpose.
