Day 1 | Youth Boot Camp 🌟

The energy is high, the conversations are meaningful, and the spirit of collaboration is inspiring as Day One of the Youth Boot Camp gets underway!

Courtesy of Vision Changers Kenya, in partnership with Kariobangi Social Justice Centre and Cowe Cbo, young people from Kariobangi North and Mukuru are coming together for two days of learning, interaction, teamwork, and sports under the theme:

"Play. Connect. Lead. – Youth Champions for Inclusion and Rebuilding Trust."

Participants are engaging in interactive workshops that explore the root causes of hate, bias, and discrimination through fun indoor games. They are also taking part in Sports for Development (S4D) sessions, learning how sport can be used as a tool to foster inclusion, strengthen communities, and promote positive social change while designing simple, practical sports action plans.

As the day progresses, participants are reflecting on what they are learning, what is challenging their perspectives, and how they can become champions of inclusion and trust within their communities.

Together, we are building safer communities; one conversation, one game, and one young leader at a time.

Africa's greatest strength lies in its young people. When empowered with mentorship, leadership, opportunity, and safe spaces to grow, they become the driving force behind lasting social change.

Every Wednesday at Kariobangi Social Justice Centre, we bring young people together in a safe and inclusive environment where they can engage in meaningful conversations, exchange ideas, build networks, and develop practical solutions to the challenges affecting their lives and communities. Every smile, every shared story, and every new idea reflects the impact of investing in our youth.

At Kariobangi Social Justice Centre, we are committed to nurturing values-driven leaders, empowering young voices, and expanding access to knowledge, opportunities, and mentorship. We believe that by equipping young people with the right skills, confidence, and support, we are shaping a future built on inclusion, justice, and sustainable development.

Together, we are raising a generation of changemakers ready to transform their communities and Africa as a whole.

Today, members of Kariobangi Social Justice Centre , Vocal Africa, the Social Justice Centers Working Group (SJCWG), alongside residents and the family of the late Erick Otieno, attended the postmortem examination at Mama Margaret Uhuru Kenyatta Hospital to establish the cause of his death.

Erick was arrested on Saturday and detained at Muthaiga Police Station. It is alleged that while in police custody, he was subjected to torture, leaving him with severe injuries. He was later taken to MSF hospital by police and referred to Mama Lucy Kibaki Hospital, where he was reportedly not admitted. Instead, he was returned to Muthaiga Police Station before being released to his family on cash bail. His family rushed him to Mama Margaret Uhuru Kenyatta Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

The postmortem, conducted by Dr. Bernard Muli, confirmed that Erick died from massive internal haemorrhage in the abdomen caused by injuries to internal organs. The report will be forwarded to the relevant investigative agencies.

These findings raise serious questions about the treatment Erick received while in police custody and reinforce the urgent need for a thorough, independent, and transparent investigation. Every person in custody has the right to life, dignity, and protection from torture and other cruel, inhuman, or degrading treatment.

We stand in solidarity with Erick Otieno's family as they seek truth, justice, and accountability. We call upon the Independent Policing Oversight Authority - IPOA KENYA (IPOA), the Directorate of Criminal Investigations - DCI, and all relevant authorities to conduct prompt investigations and ensure that anyone found responsible is held accountable in accordance with the law.

Justice for Erick Otieno. End torture. End police brutality.
