A special thank you to all the media houses that stood with us and helped amplify our ***coDay activities over the last two weeks. We appreciate your support and collaboration as we worked together to unmask the appeal of to***co and ni****ne products and spark important conversations on protecting young people from industry tactics. Thank you for helping carry these messages to audiences across the country!

Yesterday evening, IILA, together with NCCK, joined Kass FM to discuss the campaign and the growing call for mandatory front-of-pack warning labels on ultra-processed food products.

Representing IILA, our Policy Development Officer Caleb Mbugua highlighted the need for clear and easy-to-understand front of pack warning labels that help consumers make informed choices about what they eat.

Together with Rev. Paul Okoth, the discussion explored how these warning labels can help reduce the consumption of foods high in sugar, salt, and fats, contributing to the prevention of non-communicable diseases in Kenya.

To commemorate ***coDay 2026, IILA joined partners at Nairobi School to engage students from Nairobi School, Lenana School, Alliance Boys High School, Alliance Girls High School, Limuru Girls High School, State House Girls High School, Loreto Msongari High School, Kathiani Girls High School, Makueni School, Mangu High School, and others on the dangers of to***co, ni****ne addiction, and emerging ni****ne products.

With young people increasingly targeted by the to***co and ni****ne industry, creating spaces for honest conversations and sharing accurate information remains critical in preventing uptake and protecting future generations.

IILA is pleased to join the The Ministry of Health, World Health Organization (WHO), NACADA, To***co Control and Health Promotion Alliance, SCAD Kenya, KENCO, Den of Hope, and other partners for , at Umau Grounds in Embu County, to reaffirm our commitment to protecting Kenya's youth from to***co and ni****ne harm.

As emerging products such as vapes and ni****ne pouches become more accessible, it is critical to expose the industry's tactics and strengthen protections for children and young people. These products are increasingly being presented as harmless lifestyle products despite the risks they pose. Together, we must strengthen to***co control efforts and protect the next generation from ni****ne addiction.

Today is World No To***co Day.

To***co is costing Kenya up to $756 million every year through illness, lost productivity, and lives cut short. Behind this figure are real people, families, and communities affected by an entirely preventable burden. On this , let us choose prevention over addiction, health over harm, and people over profits.

Ahead of ***coDay2026, the Kenya To***co and Ni****ne Tax Coalition joined students at Kenyatta University for a Pre-WNTD Youth Activation under the theme “Unmasking the Appeal: Countering Ni****ne and To***co Addiction.”

Together with students from the KU-NOVA Club and the wider university community, we explored the realities of to***co and ni****ne addiction, unpacked the tactics used to make these products appealing to young people, and discussed how youth can play a leading role in protecting their peers. Young people are not just part of the conversation; they are part of the solution

The conversation has started. Now leadership must respond.

Real change happens when citizens speak up, and decision-makers listen. Public engagement plays a critical role in driving policy change and accountability, helping ensure that governments prioritize stronger to***co and ni****ne control measures that protect public health, especially among children and young people.

The To***co Control Amendment Act 2024 presents an opportunity to strengthen protections for current and future generations. Tag your MP and urge them to support the To***co Control Amendment Act 2024. Kenya’s youth deserve stronger protection from to***co and ni****ne harm.

Kenya cannot build a prosperous nation on the back of a sick population.

During the public hearing on the Finance Bill 2026, IILA CEO Celine Awuor and Policy Team members Caleb Mbugua and Lennox Magar made oral submissions before the National Finance and Planning Committee, calling for higher taxes on alcohol, to***co, and ni****ne products, and sugar-sweetened beverages.

The proposals aim to reduce the rising burden of non-communicable diseases and protect public health. IILA remains committed to advocating for policies that advance public good and healthier communities.

Quitting to***co or ni****ne is one of the best decisions you can make for your health and future. Every step away from addiction is a step toward better health, more freedom, and a better quality of life. It is never too late to quit, and every effort counts.

Choose health. Choose yourself. Choose a to***co-free future.

The to***co industry fears one thing: higher prices.

Why? Because increasing the cost of to***co products works. Evidence shows that a 30% annual increase in to***co taxes in Kenya would reduce smoking prevalence by 12% and help avert 62,540 premature deaths. Higher to***co taxes not only reduce affordability but also save lives, discourage youth initiation, and protect public health.

Affordable to***co means greater access, especially for young people and low-income communities. We call on the National Treasury to increase to***co excise taxes by 30% annually as part of strengthening Kenya’s to***co control efforts and reducing the affordability of harmful to***co products. Public health must come before industry profits.
