For years, q***r refugees in East Africa have faced the same unresolved crises, documentation delays that block access to food, healthcare, and shelter; systematic exclusion from humanitarian aid; daily violence and assault with no safe reporting mechanisms; no reliable data to support legal action; zero accountability for abusive community leaders; and no funding for refugee-led organizations, all while climate shocks and aid cuts deepen hunger. The systems meant to protect us have failed repeatedly, and we cannot afford to wait any longer for change.
What we urgently need is clear: documentation reform, explicit LGBTQ+ inclusion in all aid programs, safe anonymous reporting systems, data-driven advocacy, accountability for perpetrators with whistleblower protection, investment in grassroots refugee organizations, and climate-resilient food systems. But we cannot do this alone, we are calling on all allies to stand with us, not as saviors, but as siblings in the fight for justice. The work continues. Join us.

Happy Pride Month to the LGBTQ+ community and our allies around the world! RefCEA joined several community leaders and legal partners from the q***r refugee and Kenyan movement at the Canadian Consulate in Nairobi to participate in important safety and security sessions for LGBTQ+ asylum seekers and refugees. We discussed physical safety, digital and legal safety, strengthening community partnerships, where to get help, psychological protection as well as identifying threats, vulnerabilities, and capacities.
We sincerely thank the leadership at the Nairobi for including RefCEA and q***r refugees in this valuable capacity-building and support programme. Your commitment to our safety, dignity, and resilience brings positive change.

The Ghana anti-homosexuality bill is a dangerous piece of legislation that fundamentally violates the human rights and dignity of LGBTQ+ individuals, and it has no place in a just and equitable society. Such regressive laws only serve to incite hatred, encourage discrimination, and inflict severe psychological and physical harm on marginalized communities, undermining Ghana’s commitment to universal human rights protections.

🚨 A dangerous new bill in Ghana is on the verge of becoming law. 🚨
If signed by President John Dramani Mahama, it won't just impact a minority, it will threaten the fundamental right to safety, privacy, and free expression for everyone.

Under this law, citizens could face years in prison simply for being who they are, while ordinary community workers, allies, and friends could be jailed just for showing basic human kindness or offering support. 💔 No one should face prison for standing up for the dignity and safety of others.
The bill is now with President Mahama who can approve or reject it. Ask him to choose fairness and equal protection under the law. ✨
