We took part in a discussion forum that provided a timely platform to reflect on the Inua Jamii Cash Transfer Program's transition progress, shared lived experiences from the ground, identified emerging challenges, and collectively explored opportunities for improvement to ensure that no older person is left behind. The transition from bank-based payments to M-Pesa for the Older Persons Cash Transfer (OPCT) programme marks a significant milestone in enhancing the efficiency, accessibility, and dignity of social protection services for older persons in Kenya. This shift, spearheaded by the Ministry of Labour and Social Protection through the Directorate of Social Assistance, aims to address longstanding challenges faced by beneficiaries in accessing payments, such as long travel distances to banks, high transaction costs, and delays. By leveraging mobile money platforms like M-Pesa, the government seeks to bring services closer to the people, promote financial inclusion, and ensure more timely and secure disbursements. However, this change also comes with its own set of challenges, ranging from digital literacy gaps to access to mobile phones and mobile network coverage.
