Maisha Girls Safe House

Maisha Girls Safe House A safe haven for girls survivors of sexual violence and human trafficking. Website: https://maishagirlssafehouse.org/ They also learn leadership development.

We are a community project established in 2006 to mentor young girls ages 10-19 because we feel today’s youth needs the older generation to pour wisdom back into their lives. Our volunteers are young women who are dedicated to working closely with girls in difficult situations to identify their needs and provide programs to address these issues/needs. We provide an academic support program, a lif

e skill development program, hands on skills activities, networking program centered on community participation as well as one on one and group mentoring program. The objectives of Maisha girls program are:
• Increase girl’s sense of self worth.
• Improve girl’s perspective towards education.
• Help girls define their short term and long term goals
• Provide the girls and young women with positive support and encouragement to become self sufficient, motivated adults. Program description:
The twinkles club (ages-10-12). Meet weekly in a safe environment favorable for learning and having fun. In their meetings they express themselves through girl power support circles, arts and craft, drama and music. Today we show up for Every woman and girl!

For the voices that were silenced.
For the survivors carrying invisible scars.
For every family forced to bury love instead of celebrating life.

Until every woman and child is safe, we will keep speaking and demanding justice.

Menstrual Hygiene Day reflects an ongoing conversation we are already having in communities, breaking the stigma, challenging silence, and advancing dignity, access, and confidence for every girl.

Today, we took this conversation to Morrison Primary School, reaching girls in Grades 6, 7, and 8 with conversations on menstrual hygiene, confidence, dignity, and the importance of accurate information and supportive spaces.

The session created a safe platform for girls to speak openly, ask questions freely, and understand that menstruation is natural, healthy, and should never limit their education, confidence, or future.

Because when girls are informed, supported, and empowered, they are able to show up boldly without shame, fear, or stigma.

As Kenya continues to witness painful cases of missing children, International Missing Children’s Day is a reminder that child protection is everyone’s responsibility.

Too many children are disappearing quietly from homes, schools, streets, online spaces, and workplaces. Behind every missing child is a family searching, grieving, and hoping for answers.

As communities, we must pay attention to warning signs:
• Sudden disappearance from school or home
• Children frequently moving with unfamiliar adults
• Signs of abuse, fear, neglect, or isolation
• Online grooming and exploitation
• Children being hidden from community spaces

If a child goes missing or is at risk:
✔ Report immediately to the nearest police station
✔ Contact child protection offices and local leaders
✔ Share verified information responsibly
✔ Speak up when something feels wrong

Protecting children starts with vigilance, early reporting, safe communities, and collective action.

Let us become communities that notice, respond, report, and protect. Every child deserves to be safe, seen, and found.

This month, 45 voices came together in an advocacy meeting on modern-day slavery. We convened child domestic workers (CDWs), service providers, community elders, and government stakeholders for structured dialogue and action. Focusing on two panel discussions with CDWs and service providers, the conversations centered on lived experiences, drivers into domestic work, and the realities of exploitation, as well as access to essential services, including SRHR support, SGBV response, legal protection, and confidential reporting pathways.

The dialogue ended with clear commitments, including sensitizing employers on child protection and workers’ rights, promoting safe employment practices, strengthening support groups for CDWs, and improving coordination in responding to abuse and exploitation cases.

These conversations matter because exploitation often happens in private homes and is normalized when it is not spoken about, making community dialogue key to visibility, survivor support, and prevention.

Protection starts where life happens.
As we support girls who are survivors of sexual violence, we are taking advocacy beyond safe spaces & into the heart of communities. Because prevention, protection & healing begin with all of us.

Today we marked Denim Day, April 29th, with a special Caregivers’ Tea.

Denim Day (https://denimday.org/why-denim) is a powerful global statement against victim-blaming and sexual violence. By wearing denim, we join voices around the world in standing against sexual violence.

As we reflected on this important message, we also turned our attention to those who give so much of themselves in the work of care. Our Caregivers’ Tea created a warm and safe space to pause, play games, share laughter, rest, reconnect, and simply breathe because care starts with caregivers.
